OUAT – Oncers Take Manhattan Part 1

Once Upon A September Day
By Marissa @shortndsweet15

Last Thursday, my sister Nina and I had an amazing Once Upon A Time filled day. It started out as hoping to be able to see Lana’s guest appearance in “LIVE with Kelly and Michael”, but never could I have imagined the magical experience it would turn out to be.

We had to get to LIVE quite early (5 AM to be exact), because we didn’t have tickets and had to wait in the standby line. It wasn’t a guarantee, but we wanted to give ourselves our best chance. And when it comes to Lana, I’m always looking to support her in any way I can. Thankfully we got into the show! The wonderful Sara Ramirez from Grey’s Anatomy was first and then Lana came on with huge cheers from the crowd! Absolutely beautiful as always, it was so fun to see her talk about some of her favorite things about being home, and what’s in store for Regina in Season 2, including how we’re going to see a more vulnerable side to her this season. They then showed the sneak peek involving the mob scene at Regina’s house. During the whole clip, which I of course had watched endless times, I instead watched Lana as she watched the scene herself. It was so entertaining to see her watch herself on the screen. She had these priceless facial expressions, especially after Regina says “You wanted to see your Queen?”, where she had this amazing Cheshire Cat-like grin. Even in those quick moments it was so easy to see just how much she loves what she does, how much fun she has with this character, and how absolutely excited she was for others to see the magic that Season 2 was going to be. I can only imagine how incredible it would be to watch a full episode of Once Upon A Time with Lana, a thrill I can only imagine 🙂

Following LIVE, my sister and I left the studio and walked down the street. Lana was to film her guest appearance on “The Chew” that same day, and it was only that morning that I found out that the studios for “The Chew” and LIVE were right next to each other. Because we were in the audience for LIVE we couldn’t try to see Lana (as many others did) as she arrived at the studio. So we were hoping that maybe we’d be able to catch her as she went in for “The Chew”, which was to start fairly soon. While my sister and I were standing outside, Michael Symon came out briefly. I was completely caught off guard when he came out, and he looked distracted so I didn’t say anything. But my sister and I must have made some impression on him because he would mention to Lana on “The Chew” about the shaking Evil Regals that were outside! Apparently I wasn’t as composed as I thought I was! I’m also glad that at 24 I still look about 16-18 😉 Shortly after Michael walked back in, a car pulled up and who walks out but Lana herself! She immediately saw me and gave me such a huge smile and wave. She had several people with her, including her niece, and she was being escorted into the studio, but being the incredibly sweet person she is, she immediately asked them if she had a few free moments. Even though I had seen this in Los Angeles at Paley Fest, and again in Vancouver while filming, her willingness to take any time she had to spare and spend it with fans once again blew me away. It’s one of the many things that I love so much about her, and one of the countless reasons why I have such tremendous respect for her. She truly loves her fans with all her heart and she is so appreciative of the (well-deserved) love that she’s received especially since OUAT began. Furthermore, my sister is a big fan of Lana’s and had never met her before so I was thrilled for her to finally get that chance . Lana talked with us for a few wonderful minutes, and was as sweet and as kind as ever. She then had to be rushed into the studio, but not before turning around and asking us if we’d be there afterwards. I was once again floored by how much she wants to see her fans and how she wants to spend time with them. The two of us grabbed some lunch and returned to the studio. We were joined this time by two other excited Evil Regals hoping to see Lana. Lana soon came out and talked with us for a little bit. She said how filming “The Chew” was so much fun and that we all would love it. One important person who was missing was my Evil Regal Sister Paige, and while I talked to Lana, my sister got Paige on the phone and Lana was sweet enough to talk to her and say hello…I was so happy that worked out 🙂 Lana then took the time to take a quick picture with us, give me an amazing love-filled hug, and then had to get on with her very busy day. She gave me another huge smile as she got in the car. I was so incredibly grateful for the moments my sister and I had with her, moments that’ll last a lifetime. With grateful hearts, Nina and I ventured on to the next part of our day.

OUAT News – Disney agreement now giving us more options to watch Once Upon a Time

Programming giant Walt Disney Co. and pay-TV distributor Cablevision Systems Corp. have signed a wide-ranging agreement covering dozens of broadcast and cable channels including ABC, ESPN and Disney Channel.

As part of the deal, Cablevision has also agreed to carry a news and lifestyle channel from ABC and Univision that is being launched next year. The channel is an English-language service aimed at Latinos.

OUAT – Promises are the New Deals

During Season 1 we were all too familiar with the Rumpel’s/Gold’s Deals, Emma’s favor she owed Gold, the boundaries the Town Charter brought to Regina, and not to mention the power of the ultimate “Magic Word,” that Gold uses on Regina, Please.

Season 2 brings a new edge to it all.

As with any interesting story, the next Season (or Chapter) brings a fresh look at characters we thought we already knew (especially since Magic was brought back to change things substantially), and the same is happening to Once Upon a Time.

I have discussed the power of love that Belle wields against Gold, which is powerful unto itself, but with that power also comes promises and commitment with unconditional love.

Belle makes Gold promise not to kill Regina (I’ll also through in the urging she gave him to not give in to his hate). Belle exemplifies the sense of forgiveness that is not shown too often by our baddies in OUAT. Even after Belle was kidnapped and locked up for 28 years, she felt that being released to find the man she loved was enough to let Regina off the hook. The norm of Gold of enacting revenge to continue the cycle of constant back and forth that never ends. From a point of mercy and forgiveness, Belle urges Gold to promise, hopefully to get him to change, but even in Gold’s tearful promise, his mind was still racing to find “another” way to keep his promise and satisfy his revenge. Once Belle realizes that even though Gold promises, it is a murky promise with many loopholes and wiggle room reinterpreting words and situations to end at the same goal, but taking a longer route.

Belle, as many people realize that her yearning to change a person isn’t enough to enact the change. Gold realizes as he did before in Fairy Tale Land that his love for Belle wasn’t enough to actually get him to change. In the exchange (in “Broken”) he said that the (Wraith) monster was gone, but Regina lives and (giving Belle the out) urging Belle to leave. Again Belle showing unconditional love and (maybe unrealistic goals by staying in a relationship to model, love and change someone) choices to stay.

We will see how the goodness, kindness, forgiveness and unconditional love plays out in her relationship with Gold, or will Gold end up affecting Belle the other way?

Henry also uses the power of the promise and unconditional love, as well.

With the mob scene and the freedom of a broken curse, as people head to Regina’s house to enact revenge for the dark curse, Henry asks them to not kill her, because Regina is his other Mother. Later, Regina seems surprised that Henry asked Emma to protect her. Emma leads the charge of Henry’s promise, as well as Snow’s realization that killing Regina will do nothing to better the uncursed inhabitants of Storybrooke. James follows the mandate, but struggles with it.

Ultimately, when Henry interrupts Regina almost un-hearting James, it is Henry that is the powerful one to back her away from her power and vengeance play. Regina’s love for Henry and Henry’s goodness (now for James). The final speech that Henry gives to Regina is the line in the sand (and the story arc of Season 2, I’ll bet) that unless Regina can bring back Emma and Snow that she will leave Henry and everyone alone. To add salt to the wound and power to the promise he will live with James. We will see if Regina holds exactly to the promise, or if she finds wiggle room like Gold does.

OUAT – Storybrooke has the Island on Lost problems

So, sure we have seen groups of unnamed people in Storybrooke before;

Any day many people are walking around on the Main Street of Storybrooke,

Miner’s Day festivities,

Sheriff debate,

Town Hall Meeting,

Henry’s school, etc, but I noticed more unnamed people closely in front of Regina’s house:

Sure, these could be just extras, but when you keep hearing that the people in Storybrooke are “Fairy Tale characters ripped from their world and sent here,” and “No one can get in (except for Henry, Emma and August (Pinocchio),” then you must come to the hard reality that all these people must be some kind of Fairy Tale character, unless the Fairy Tale characters joined the unsuspecting townsfolk of pre-curse Storybrooke.

Okay, let’s step away from that for a second and go through my constant chuckle at Lost. A plane crash with survivors. You get to know these survivors, but then as you watch the show there are these background people carrying sticks, water, etc. Who are these people? Watch a few episodes of Lost show the survivors and you’ll see that instead of just a small number of survivors, there are many other people wandering around in the background. I called them “stick carriers”.

To me, Storybrooke has the same thing now.

We have even named a few. I give you Cap Man;

again

this guy even takes change from the pay phone in Granny’s diner.

What kind of background people have you noticed in Once Upon a Time? How do you account for all the extra people?

OUAT – Aurora and The Spinning Wheel spotted

In “Broken,” next to the bed that Sleeping Beauty was sleeping on, we see a spinning wheel:

Even though Fairy Tales get twisted in Once Upon a Time, this actually matches up with one of the versions of Sleeping Beauty (and the Disney film):

Now, you don’t suppose Rumpelstiltskin had anything to do with that spinning wheel, do you? 🙂
