The OUAT Winter Finale is here! Welcome to our Once Upon a Time Wish You Were Here Review.

Wish You Were Here Review

#Spoilers, obviously

Quick Once Upon a Time Wish You Were Here Review

We find out what life in (a parallel “dream” universe of) Fairy Tale land would have been like if Emma would have never been the savior. Henry is knighted and acts knightly. We learn the negative and positive aspects of the Regina and Evil Queen “connection”. The Dark Fairy kidnaps Gideon from the Blue Fairy and shows him the ‘Dark Side’. We learn that the hooded figure is Gideon and that he has the power to turn the Evil Queen into a metallic living Cobra (which I think looks a lot like Jafar’s staff, just sayin’). Belle and Rumpel will do what they can to rescue Gideon. As Regina and Emma use a bean acquired from Rumpel, Robin appears and the portal (which has a time limit) closes before that can use it to leave.

Oh yeah, there are LOTS of Evil Queens, some real, some are cosplayed by Regina.

7 Things That Stood Out in OUAT Wish You Were Here

1. I hope they give Grumpy a raise. Grumpy does a very important job, warning towns/castles that danger is coming or is already there. It’s an important job, for sure. Now he’s hauling around a makeshift bird cage we hope has been retrofitted to keep a metal Evil Queen Cobra from biting him. All this danger he is constantly in is reason enough for a raise AND a date with Nova. Nova’s cute, remember?

2. The Mystery of the Red Jeweled Sword. Now, I think Emma is making a huge mistake. Belle is a fantastic researcher. She needs to find out what magic is infused in that sword that Emma is carrying around. I’ve mentioned before that I think that the red gem in it points to Jafar. If I’m wrong about that, the color red in nature means danger, so there’s that. I mean the Evil Queen drinks red Appletinis for heaven’s sake. Red is bad, people. Red is bad. Belle could research what the sword represents and how Emma can use the sword properly to destroy the hooded figure, but no Emma won’t ask her. Belle isn’t just another pretty face – or pretty legs. Emma, just ask Belle. Pretty please?

3. Lots of Disney in this OUAT episode tonight;
A. Emma wished on a star and blew out a cupcake star candle (like she did in the Pilot),

Want to revisit the early days of OUAT? Check out our Beginner’s Guide to OUAT here
B. Team 7 (actually only Team 5 and Grumpy is too cool to whistle. 😉 ) were whistling ‘Heigh Ho’ as they walked down the road in ‘dream’ Fairy Tale land,
C. Emma was humming ‘Someday My Prince Will Come’ frolicking in the forest. She’s a good frolicker. Seriously, she is.

4. Rumpel, I mean Gollum was great. In the ‘dream’ FTL, Rumpel sounded very much like the Rumpel we met way back in the Pilot. I thought it was more Gollum-like as well.

5. Tempting, isn’t it? Rumpel was back to his old tempting ways in the ‘dream’ FTL when he convinces Regina to “be evil (like she used to be)” to convince Emma that she is the savior. The script didn’t go the way I thought they were going with it. I thought Regina would begin to like her return to evil and want to stay that way. However, they played it for comedic value mostly.

6. Okay, what is it with Aladdin’s Magic Lamp? It now has a Genie attached to it with 3 wishes that will be granted. Why in the world didn’t the Evil Queen hide and/or protect it better than leaving it sitting around for anyone from Regina, Charming and Jasmine to walk around the Mayor’s desk and pick it up? I mean come on! Evil Queenie, I love you and your cleavage, but you need some more magical protection spell training.

7. Surrender? Really? Regina (posing as the Evil Queen) had to dig deep into her dark past to push Emma to use her magic. When we doubt ourselves and listen to the negative voice in our heads it can take difficulties in our lives for us to be who we really are. We all have gifts and strengths and we need to use them and refine them, not hold back. Many times in OUAT, we see characters accept and become who they really are or who they should be.

Most Valuable Player for OUAT Wish You Were Here

Regina

I know, I know I’ve said it many times before. Regina is one of greatest characters on TV. She struggles, yes, but we also see her helping others and being second to allow others to be first. Even when she chooses to stay in the ‘dream’ version of Fairy Tale Land to be with Robin. What if we were in a similar situation and we found a loved one in a dream – we would definitely want to stay for awhile. Regina isn’t a squeaky clean 1950’s Superman, she is like us. She has good moments and bad moments. The key to life is not to be perfect, but to learn and grow in life.

Final Thoughts about OUAT Wish You Were Here

To me the reveal of the hooded figure was a bit like Scooby Doo, it was someone we knew briefly, but hopefully the ‘why’ will make sense. We still need to figure out if Emma’s vision will be true or not. Will the red-jeweled sword help or hurt Emma? I think it’s bad, but we’ll see.

Belle and Rumpel

The one thing I think Adam and Eddy are setting up is Belle and Rumpel joining forces to free their son, Gideon. This storyline is similar to Han Solo and General Leia working together to help bring Ben Solo to the light side of the force. Two people fighting against a foe can create a bond, so we’ll see if this will bring Belle and Rumpel together.

Some Candlelight Processional History

Every year, Disneyland and Walt Disney World hold a special Winter narrated and musical holiday event called the Candlelight Processional. On December 20, 1958, the first Candlelight Processional was held at Disneyland. Even with all the ‘Disneyized Holiday decorations, parades, shows, etc, the processional was a way to highlight the more traditional aspects of Christmas.

Normally, there are two presentations for two nights at Disneyland. It was tried as a special event in a separate enclosed area at Disneyland, but then it was decided to hold the event on Main Street. It is a ticketed event with seats roped off only for the Candlelight Processional, but you may be able to catch a peek at the event if you are visiting Disneyland.

Many great choirs are chosen to participate in this great event singing Holiday songs as well as traditional Christmas carols.

For a long time, I felt that Once Upon a Time never got that much attention from the Disney parks, but it’s nice that some of the OUAT cast were chosen to participate in this event.

Have a great holiday season!

What You Need to Know for OUAT Wish You Were Here Winter Finale

The Jekyll and Hyde storyline may not have lasted as long as some of us would have hoped. The poor souls in the “Land of Untold Stories” still have untold stories. We’ve briefly met Captain Nemo and the Aladdin storyline seems to be taking a front seat (Don’t ask about Jafar, yet), but before Santa visits, here is what you need to know for OUAT Wish You Were Here Winter Finale.

EW Interview with Edward Kitsis – Winter Finale Poses Curse-less Reality

“One thing that people have always wondered is what would happen if the curse was never enacted and Emma grew up in a fairy tale, and that’s what we’re going to show,” executive producer Edward Kitsis tells EW of the winter finale.

This alternate reality, of sorts, is very different from what viewers know happened in the Enchanted Forest. “It is a world where there’s no villains,” Kitsis notes. “The big villain was defeated, there was no curse, and peace and joy got to flourish.”

OUAT Wish You Were Here Winter Finale

TVLINE | Will there be unexpected consequences? The logline for the midseason finale teases a “surprising danger” facing Belle and Rumple’s son.

When does this show ever not have any surprising consequences? [Laughs] Obviously, being the midseason finale, they’ve done an amazing job with, in my opinion, a lot of unexpected situations. Going into it, you’ve got Belle believing that Rumple is the one who spiked her tea, so she is in the mindset of him being the devil to her at this point. Their tumultuous relationship is at a peak. It’s a struggle, because if you look at and analyze everything that Rumple does — whether it’s motivated by his addiction to magic or not — it’s to protect Belle, to protect his children. You find out a little bit more about that this week, and yes, Belle and Gold are faced with probably one of the biggest surprises they’ve had in a long time.

Once Upon a Time Season 6 Episode 9 Thoughts: The Changelings

Did you get a chance to catch once upon a time season 6 episode 9? We share some thoughts here, but welcome yours as well in the comments.

Once Upon a Time Season 6 Episode 9 Thoughts

The Changelings

The Dark Fairy history

We finally meet the famous Dark (or Black) Fairy. We have heard about the Dark Fairy from Tink previously, “(The Dark Fairy was) One of the most powerful of fairies that ever existed. Well versed in the dark magic. The Blue Fairy exiled her, but before she did she took her wand.”

Dark Fairy Dust

In the episode “Snow Falls”, Snow visited the Dark Fairy and obtained some fairy dust to use it on the Evil Queen;

Snow White: Careful! It’s a weapon.

Prince Charming: Dust? What kind of weapon is dust?

Snow White: Fairy dust.

Prince Charming: I thought that was a good thing?

Snow White: When it comes from a good fairy. This stuff? Is deadly. It transforms the most fearsome of adversaries into a form that’s easily squashed. (OUAT 1X3 “Snow Falls”)

Snow used the Dark Fairy dust on some of the Trolls to escape them on the Troll Bridge.

Dark Fairy Wand

There have been some instances in which the wand was needed. One instance, in Season 3 was using the want to switch back Pan and Henry’s bodies.

Once Upon a Time Season 6 Episode 9 Thoughts

Dark Fairy Dust Part Deux

There was one other use of the Dark Fairy dust. Again in Season 3, Snow snuck into Regina’s castle and tried to use it on Regina. However, Regina stopped the dust Snow threw at her in mid-air and thwarted Snow’s plan.

The Dark Fairy – Mommy?

One of the biggest reveals is that we find that the Dark Fairy is actually Rumpel’s Mother. She admitted to choosing power over Rumpel and abandoned him, continuing the theme of parents abandoning their children.

Once Upon a Time Season 6 Episode 9 Thoughts

The Rumpel Question Now

Now that we know Rumpel was the offspring of a Dark Fairy and Peter Pan, it is a given that he would have magical power. However, why did he feel that he needed the power of the Dark One dagger?

Still Wondering

Belle asked this question, but we still don’t have an answer to what Rumpel has to gain from taking children?

Squid Ink Everywhere

There was a time when getting and saving Squid Ink took planning, a special Conch shell and more, but now it’s everywhere! Wet or Dry Squid Ink seems to have different effects when used. The more you know. 🙂

Clash between Evil Queen and Zelena

To me, this seemed like something out of the movie “Goodfellas”, an old fashioned Mafia-styled hit. Fortunately, Regina showed up and used Evil Queen’s heart to stop her from destroying Zelena. I loved Regina’s truthful conversation with Evil Queen telling her that revenge never fills the void in a heart and to not trust Rumpel.

Nothing is as powerful is someone warning another of the dangers of a life path – especially from someone who has walked it themselves.

Emma’s Kryptonite

Emma’s visions used to make her hands shake and now they make her weak. It reminds me of Superman and Kryptonite.

I think the vision is Emma battling herself.

That is the great battle we all face – our inner negative self.

Rumpel’s honesty

The discussion that Rumpel had with Belle at the library elevator was heartbreaking. Many times we don’t want to believe the brutal truth about someone. We think they can change and even if they take one step forward and two steps back, we still hope for the best. Unfortunately, it appears that Rumpel hasn’t made complete room in his heart for Belle’s love.

Belle tried to explain – again – that magic isn’t what Rumpel needs to fix his life, but Rumpel disagrees.

Regina and Zelena dialogue

Regina parallels Rumpel in some ways but has come farther in regards to leaving the darkness and embracing the light.

However, with all of us forgiveness is the most difficult to give to someone we don’t feel deserves it. Even though we may have granted forgiveness freely, many times we give others forgiveness when we see fit to.

Regina saved Zelena because “that’s what Heroes do,” but that seems like a duty and not from the heart. Even though Regina has come farther along away from the Darkness, she still has some further issues to resolve.

Jasmine and Aladdin

Jasmine used the lamp to wish her way back to Agrabah, but the shackles of the Genie came out instead of a Genie and her wishes. Someone should tell Jasmine about portals. There are more portals laying around than wet or dry Squid Ink these days.

The script followed the story of the Disney “Aladdin” and mentioned that the Genie was free.

As an act of kindness and sacrifice, Aladdin put on the shackles to confine him as the new Genie (‘I knew a pretty great one (Genie) once and he’s been free for awhile. Maybe I could be like him’) and grant Jasmine her wish to return.

I wonder if after Jasmine uses the first wish to get back to Agrabah, that Evil Queen or Rumpel will stir up trouble requiring the other two wishes, leaving Aladdin trapped as the Genie.

Red Jeweled Sword

Can someone say ‘Jafar’?

Is Gideon safe?

Blue Fairy did take and seemingly hide away Gideon from Rumpel, but is the child truly safe? Will Evil Queen or Zelena have a hand in revealing the baby’s whereabouts and return him to Rumpel?

Are there any other thoughts you would like to add about this episode to the comment section below?

Want to Learn 5 Once Upon a Time Secrets? Read on and you will find secrets that could make you a Super Oncer.

5 Once Upon a Time Secrets

1. Sherlock Holmes almost was in Season 1

Showrunner, Edward Kitsis admits that Jamie Dornan (Sheriff Graham/The Huntsman) almost donned a deerstalker cap and solved mysteries in Storybrooke.

Kitsis: “Here’s something interesting. Originally the sheriff was Sherlock Holmes. He was going to be a detective and his curse was he was in a town with no mystery. So he was this bored sheriff. And there was a rights issue so we could not get it.” from http://www.ew.com/article/2012/10/21/once-upon-jack-sparrow

2. Originally, Charming had a very different fate in the Pilot

Kitsis admitted that initially that Charming was slotted to die at the end of the Pilot script, but ABC talked him out of such a bleak ending. (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/once-a-time-100th-episode-871533) How would you have felt about the show if Charming would have died at the end of the Pilot episode?

3. You won’t believe who almost played the Blue Fairy

It’s no secret that showrunners Kitsis and Horowitz are huge music fans. The role of the Blue Fairy was originally offered to Lady Gaga. Since the Blue Fairy does make return appearances on OUAT quite often, it might have been very tough to line up schedules. (http://www.wetpaint.com/which-pop-idol-almost-played-807089/)

4. Hook was to be in Season 1

In Season 1 of OUAT, Hook was going to be introduced, but copyright issues stood in the way. By the beginning of Season 2, the copyright issues of Peter Pan had been ironed out and Hook became part of the OUAT story.

5. Once Upon a Time almost had a Sci-Fi Feel

Katee Sackhoff – as Emma? It could have happened. Katee Sackhoff (better known as Starbuck from the 2004 version of Battlestar Galactica) auditioned 5 times for the role of Emma. How would Once Upon a Time have been to you with a different Emma?
