Well, I’m sad!! :’-(. As the rock trolls say “people make bad choices when they’re mad or scared or stressed.” I’m truly amazed at these writers and their ability to surprise this somewhat jaded viewer (watching 11 seasons of Supernatural can do that!). My first thoughts on this episode are basically DUDE, OMG, WHAT?!?!?! and AWESOME!!! I can’t believe you guys got the podcast up so quickly, I hope they didn’t kill off Merlin, we just got him!! I want him to continue on the show. Anyways, look forward to listening to your first thoughts and later analysis. It was interesting how the dark one and Merlin (I’ll call him the light one) can accomplish so much together. It makes me think of how often times in life we have to work for and listen to people we either really don’t see eye to eye with, or we just don’t like. This episode is also a testament to letting go of those you love and learning to live with loss, especially when the other only wants the best for you. It’s a little bit similar to what I imagine parenting to be: as a parent you want only the best for your children, the worst thing a child can do is sacrifice his or her own life for their parents, that’s not how it’s supposed to happen. Any parent would give their lives for their children’s happiness (Charming’s mother for example in one of the most beautiful moments in the series). Sorry this went on so long and I hope it’s not too hard to read. Ciao y’all

From Nicola

Hi Jeff and Colleen,

Firstly, I just want to thank you both for your twice weekly podcasts. I only started really listening to them recently and really enjoy them; they help make the working day go a lot faster! This is also the first time I have emailed you guys (though I have tweeted/re-tweeted you a few times under the handle @alomostanangel) so please forgive me if I ramble on a bit.

Well, what can I say about this episode?! I really enjoyed watching it – even if it was before I left for work so had to ensure my emotions remained in check to avoid any awkwardness when walking into the office! I think we all knew that everything Emma was doing was for Killian/Hook but the way in which it was confirmed was amazing. I also had a feeling that the dreamcatcher that Emma was seen clutching and crying over a couple of weeks ago was actually Killian’s and that by having Regina and Killian finding Henry’s was a red herring.

Collen was right in first thoughts – Emma stabbing Excalibur in the ground froze Snow, Charming, Regina et al so they couldn’t go into the house to stop her killing Zelena.

I’m not going to go too much into the episode, just really wanted to focus on the twist/big reveal of Emma turning Killian into a dark one. I completely understand Emma’s decision to save Killian’s life no matter what and some of what she said reminded me of the following scene from ‘Rocky Road’ (S4E3):

Killian: “Swan; don’t make a man drink alone”
Emma: “Not in the mood for a drink. Or a man”
Killian: “Sorry I didn’t listen to you today. Right, I know you feel like you’ve got the weight of the world on your shoulders but at some point, even though we’re quite different, you’ve got to trust me”
Emma: “That’s what you think this is about? That I don’t trust you?”
Killian: “Is that not what it’s about?”
Emma: “Of course I trust you”
Killian: “Then why do you keep pulling away from me?”
Emma: “Because everyone I’ve ever been with is dead! Neal, Graham; even Walsh. I lost everyone. I can’t lose you too.”
Killian: “My love, you don’t have to worry about me. There’s one thing I’m good at; surviving”

I can see Emma’s reasoning behind her actions. She’s only just really fully accepting how she feels towards him and being very open about it only to have him cruelly taken away; and her justification to the group was right too – they all would have done anything and everything they could (and in some cases they have done all they could) to save their loved one. Yes, there may well have been another way to save Killian without him becoming a dark one, and yes, she was selfish in her actions; but in Emma’s mind, after losing every man she loved/had romantic feelings for (and to be honest, she didn’t really fight as hard for their lives as she has for Killian’s), she was not going to lose the man she loves with her whole being.

I did wonder though why she had to tether his life to Excaliber though? Why could they not have taken his heart out and put him in a coma similar to the one Gold was in to buy them time to work out a way of saving him? Just a thought but there is probably a logical explanation; plus it wouldn’t have as much as a dramatic impact as this twist.

I did not see this twist coming though so kudos to everyone who works on the show for managing to keep that twist under wraps!! I am looking forward to seeing where they take this story arc and how it will all play out. Most of all, I am hoping that Captain Swan manage to fight this together!!

Anyway that is all I have to say. Thank you again for the podcasts; I do enjoy listening and find myself wishing I could join in with your conversations!

Big love to you and all the OUAT listeners out there,

Nicola 🙂

From Amber

Hello Lady, Colleen, and Jeff (sorry guys…lady’s first) *;) winking

My name is Amber and this is my first time writing you. I first want to congratulate you on 300 episodes….I hope for another 300!!! I found your podcast back at the beginning of OUAT season 2, but for whatever reason never listened to my downloaded episodes until the end of season 4 when I had no internet (for yours and other podcasts I wanted to try). I quickly narrowed down the podcasts I was listening to to just listening to yours. During the summer hiatus, I made it through the long months of waiting for season 5 by catching up with your past episodes. I love your comments, insights, theories, and research you add to make yours stand out from the multiples of OUAT fan podcasts. I’m also a huge fan of many of the same: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean, Back to the Future, and most of the hidden Easter eggs scattered throughout the show.
Like you, I came into OUAT on the Lost ship and was hooked before the first episode aired. All I knew about the show was Adam and Eddie from Lost, producing a fairy-tale show, with Ginnifer Goodwin (who is just absolutely lovable) playing Snow White. That was all I needed to know. When the show premiered, I quickly fell in love with the other actors and characters on the show. I love the character development and flashbacks, and constant anticipation for what’s going to happen next.
When the season 5 premier was on the horizon, I found myself with no television and an extremely limited amount of internet access(I know, AAAACK!!!), and was going crazy with the thought of missing my favorite show. I finally made the decision that I was going to download and listen to your podcasts without having watched the show first! *Gasp* Yes, I’m forgoing some of the spoilers because not knowing anything was more torturous than losing the fresh eyes I would have without first listening to your reviews and insights. Honestly, I’m still keeping some of the mystery (I only have your podcasts through 300) and don’t plan on downloading any more until I can catch up with the OUAT episodes, and I’m really looking forward to joining the conversations once I have my home internet up and running!!
Anyway, congratulations to you again, and Big Love to you and all the other Oncers….talk to you again soon when I have the chance to catch up!

From Kathy

Hi Colleen and Jeff,

Please disregard my earlier email. I not only left out a couple points, but there were also typos.

I also was expecting two back to back episodes that tied together. The second hour while entertaining left me hanging. I did enjoy how they brought Mulan back into the fold and seeing Ruby is always a wonderful thing. I hope they both stay at least for awhile. Longer would be better.

My initial thoughts watching Birth: OMG OMG OMG and NO!!!! What a great episode.

Questions I now have:

If becoming a dark one is thrust upon you and not chosen how does it manifest itself? Killian had no idea he was a Dark One. Dark Ones don’t sleep, has Killian not been sleeping? Does he have magic and not know it?

Two dark ones? Or two sorta dark ones? How is this going to be resolved?

Emma’s transformation by embracing the dark when she “saved” Killian finally explains why she now looks as she does. How dark is she really though? She said her plan was to destroy the darkness so she can’t be all bad. But would she really kill Zelena?

How long will Regina, Snow and David stay frozen outside Emma’s house? Will Regina be able to step in and either stop Zelena from doing something terrible or help Emma and Killian in some way?

How will the others now react towards Killian?

Where is Lancelot? Seems he was locked up in Camelot, was he brought to Storybrooke as well?

What has happened to Merlin? When he was tethered to the sword, did some dark enter him? He doesn’t seems dark. Black tendrils certainly were pulled out of him by Emma.

Random thoughts:

Killian seems pretty angry so I am wondering what he means by taking care of her (Emma) first. His last few words were chilling. I hope he is trying to still help her while throwing Zelena off his plan.

A smoldering Killian is pretty hot!

Regina’s red velvet gown is absolutely gorgeous. And I loved her line “No one hurts my sister, except me!”.

I love Zelena. She is so unabashedly evil. I was convinced she would renege on her deal with Killian.

I thought the dwarves were going to have more of a role in this story and I’m disappointed that hasn’t happened.

I loved seeing Dr. Whale again and the dialogue about his hair was hilarious!

I could go on for pages, but will stop here. I am feeling a lot of angst over this.

Thanks for your terrific podcasts. It’s the best start to my week, every week.

Take care.

From Brad – Birth

Greetings Jeff and Colleen,
before you flip any tables over the issues in this episode, here’s the things I learned this week, in Birth.

#1. What could be better than
having an intimate date night
with your wife? Sharing it
with a friend of course!

#2. Killian Jones can be lead
detective in the spinoff
series, CSI: Storybrooke.

#3. Every movie expert knows,
it’s always the wayward
pupil that turns on you in
the end.

#4. Trusting Zelena to keep her
word is like trusting a
Charming to keep a secret.

#5. “Mommies with Magic”
should be a self help
Storybrooke blog.

#6. Onion rings can reduce
the amount of pregnancy
time.

#7. Snow may be developing a
fetish for strangulation.

#8. Hook has a very sad taste in
jewelry.

#9. Just because you’re a
zombie Doctor, doesn’t mean
you can’t deliver babies.

#10. Emma used the old spring
loaded snakes trick with
the flame of prometheus.

BURNING QUESTIONS

Is it possible that Hook unknowingly used Dark One magic to cut off Zelena’s cuff?

Why is Hook able to control his darkness when he doesn’t realize he’s a Dark One but as soon as he sees the vision he immediately turns dark? When Emma came through the vault she saw the vision of Rumple right away, why didn’t Hook see any visions in Storybrooke? Is it because he is the first one in a new chain of dark ones?

WHAT I LEARNED IN FIRST THOUGHTS OF BIRTH

#1. On the side, Jeff specializes
in relaxation techniques for
Once Upon A Time stress
relief.

#2. Permission was granted,
tweet Adam about your
barking dogs.

#3. Once Upon A Time is so
Jerry Springer.

#4. The three magic words that
Colleen loves to hear are,
Jeff was wrong……at least
in his mind.

#5. An enchanted hook does
what it wants.

To Be Continued……………

—————–

From Brad – The Bear King

Welcome to part two, which is not a continuation of my first email but a completely different one entirely! This email is actually two years after the third season and not two years before. That would make this the first season, which it is not. Two years before that, the show wasn’t even on the air. So lets fast forward 5 years into the future and then one year back but only five days after this episode premiered. Makes sense? Good. Now onto the things I leaned this week in the episode, The Bear King.

#1. Unless you want to learn
sign language, don’t ever
disrespect a man’s
daughter.

#2. There’s nothing more
stressful than a witch with
an IOU.

#3. When all else fails, there’s
always squid ink.

#4. After picking a fight with
Mulan, is the perfect time to
do your impression of
Luke Skywalker losing his
hand.

#5. Someone needs to sew
those clansmen some
shirts.

#6. When an attractive
wearwolf pounces on you,
you can take solace in the
fact that at least you’ll die
happy.

#7. Dudes! Ole Tiny’s probably
trapped in a maze of bean
fields right about now.

#8. Never play 20 questions
with Mulan.

#9. Eating your boyfriend
disqualifies you from giving
dating advice.

#10. With the right kind of
ale, you can talk to the dead.

OBSERVATIONS

I really wish they would have shown us the scene with Ruby and Snow awhile back instead of trying to make up for it after the fact. At least they realized they needed to give us some type of explanation instead of pretending she’s been there the whole time, as they’ve done many times with other characters.

WHAT I LEARNED IN FIRST THOUGHTS OF THE BEAR
KING.

#1. A parody inspired by
Colleen’s rant called “Two
Years From What” should
be created and sent to
Adam and Eddy.

#2. Jeff likes to rename the
episodes with his own
subtitles.

#3. Colleen is getting really
tired of the ding dang
flash backs, flash forwards,
flash drives and flash
dancing!

#4. Calling a helmet a helm, is
stupid.

#5. Rip Van Winkle does
karaoke.

That’s all for this week. Sending you both big love and wishing you a happy Thanksgiving. We have so much to be thankful for. See you in two weeks.

Ta-ta!

Brad

Hi Colleen and Jeff,

Hope it’s not too late-what a crazy busy week! I went into the episodes knowing these were separate episodes back to back, so it wasn’t so bad of a transition for me. But I can see how that would throw you off when the second one got underway. The ADD in me just loved these episodes!!! Here, there and everywhere. So many shiny things to distract and keep my crazy brain busy. These are definitely ones to rewatch and take it all in. I think there would be way less negative fandom if these episodes weren’t back to back…ok, and if they could keep track of the time a bit better. I actually liked them both a lot….I know-really? Yes, there are a lot of head scratchers, but I still liked them anyway. Being right does feel good Colleen. Here are my thoughts on Birth.

I knew Emma was up to something, just didn’t know what it was, and never imagined this at all! I saw the screen shot of Hooks name on the sword too Jeff, but didn’t know what the heck it meant. Ok, honestly though, if all it takes to not be the dark one is to forget that you are one, then problem solved…really?? Regina could have just wiped Emma’s memories of ever sacrificing herself to be the dark one as soon as they got to Camelot, find a way home and done. Too easy. I honestly am still trying to figure out the whole tethered to the sword rules and dark one rules…was Merlin a dark one when he got tethered, how come he didn’t rise up out of the vault? And her not being able to give up the darkness because she didn’t want to move in with Hook? I know…it’s the ‘Commitment”, but I still think it was “lame, lame, lame” to quote another Disney villain. Wow Hook, didn’t take ya long to turn dark. One second you’d do anything for Emma, next second you join Zelena and go dark? Amazing will power there sir, I wanted to punch him in his way to sexy face. Then again, being turned into the thing you hate most after you begged to be let go would tick me off too. I would have done the same thing tho-watching another true love die in my arms…ugh-too much. And what spell was that she did with the sword? A protection spell? Die she give them their memories back? I loved the magic fight and even more that she got Merlin to fight the darkness as he had helped her. Who has to pay for the magic she used to save Hook…is the Fury on the way? Ok, off my soap box because I did like the episode just had a lot of hmmmms. Arthur is just annoying now. He’s such a big baby. I know it’s wrong, but I can’t wait for Lancelot to show up and plant one on Guinevere and break that pink eye spell-she deserves better! Zelena is comic wicked goodness. She’s worth being back just for how snarky she is. I groaned out loud though with the accelerated baby story-though I’m glad we don’t have a whole season of her pregnancy. She seemed happier being evil, and not in a hurry, I mean I would have poofed back to my baby the minute I was free!!

Things that made me go hmmmm…I already jumped down off my soap box so no more hmmmms for today.

Big Love Oncers! Take the week off to re-watch everyone. Watch them as too completely separate episodes, and I think some of the angst will soften. It was a great episode as a standalone and season one did this all the time and we loved it. Talk to you all next week about the Bear and the Bow, and the trio of feminine greatness…go Mulredia! From Trace

Hi Colleen and Jeff,

First…let’s start this email out right! COLLEEN was right! Way to go girl. Let’s give credit where credit is due. Wow, what a jammed packed episode full of Once Upon a time goodness…so much history came together. I just love when past moments and important items and scenes from the past come back and mean something now. We’ve been waiting so long for the Dark One History and it did not disappoint. I did almost have a brain hemorrhage about the timeline with that 200 years ago craziness, but thank goodness everyone-Adam and Eddy did come out and say it was mistake and should have been 500 yrs ago. Whew…makes waay more sense now. I pretty much have decided to give up on the time line and just enjoy the show. This was a great episode. Here are my thoughts on Nimue.

I loved Hook being so brooding and angry about Emma and Merlin really is the only person that truly understands how he feels. I really think they did great job of making us feel the love story for Merlin and Nimue in a short period of time. I am truly invested in their relationship and really felt so sad for how it resolved. I think Emma saying that she felt that Nimue still loved Merlin though twisted, is going to mean something later. I know the big question is how did Nimue get to drink from the Holy Grail? I wonder if it’s kinda like the Excalibur? Once Arthur pulled the sword anyone could touch it and not poof into dust-so maybe once Merlin got the cup, anyone else could drink if they got it? Just an idea. Emma and Merlin on a quest was great. That whole story was perfect. I loved Emma fighting against the darkness and her realization that she is not nothing and beat the darkness-so epic! Jennfifer Morrison was on point this episode!! Arthur has lost his ever loving mind for sure. He is a new level of crazy. I think he has surpassed Jackhole Colleen…he’s really gone whackadoo. And how did he get so magical? WTF Scooby gang, and Regina in particular. You trusted Zelena???? Really? And if that wasn’t bad enough, you let Snow White guard her? Ugh…the bad ass Snow of the past would NEVER been taken in by this and she would have fought back for sure. Thank goodness all of you came to Camelot to help…what? Have they helped her at all? Seems they have only made things worse since they got there. And I feel there is more to come since now she has to save them all from cray cray Arthur and a mind controlled Merlin…get ready CaptainSwan shippers, I really think Hook is in trouble!

Things that made me go hmmm…why didn’t that smoldering goo burn through the table when he melted the helmet? And…how were they supposed to use it….they left the ladle in the room…hehe. When did Arthur and Zelena plot their plan? She should NEVER be left alone-and if she’s mute-how did they plot at all? Zelena is awesome though…her scenes and lines are hilarious. Where’s the dwarfs??? Why aren’t they helping? Where is granny? And why has Robin been reduced to a side dish?

Big Love to you and all the Oncers! 2 hours everyone-I can’t even stand it-I’m having friends over and we’re having meat pie, onion rings, kale salad, rum runners and chocolate iced donuts! Talk you all next week, Trace

—————–

From Brad

Hello Jeff and Colleen, even though the Darkness is very tempting, never forget that taking the right path feels damn good too. Now unto the things I learned this week on the episode, Nimue.

#1. When drinking from the
Holy Grail, take a second
look to make sure the
remains of your vaporized
friend are not still floating
inside.

#2. Nothing says revenge like
planting flowers.

#3. Merlin only believes in eco
friendly wedding bands.

#4. Don’t eat the soup offered
from Artie’s cauldron.

#5 Before the opera of the
nineteenth century, there
was the Phantom of
Camelot.

#6. The sisterhood of the
traveling Dark One’s, would
be an amazing remake.

#7. It’s all butterflies and roses
until your lady goes all
immortal on you.

#8. If things don’t work out as
the Dark One, Nimue could
audition for the Geico
commercial.

#9. Vortigan could have used
some Neutrogena on that
face.

#10. Being the Dark One is
easy, until you try and agree
on which television show to
watch.

BURNING QUESTIONS

Who thought it would be a great practical joke to place the Holy Grail in the middle of a desert?

Why was Merlin powerless to see Nimue future?

Did the Holy Grail allow Nimue to take a drink so that she would become the ultimate darkness? Sometimes clearly seeing the two sides of good and evil, makes it easy to stay away from the grey area. Was this a way to keep some kind of balance?

What if every Dark One escaped into their own entity? Kind of like all the ghost escaping in Ghostbusters.

OBSERVATIONS

The Apprentice was dressed in a red robe just like Mickey Mouse in Fantasia, minus the hat of course.

THEORIES

If Colleen’s theory about Emma only pretending to be dark, so that she can covertly defeat the Darkness, than this theory could work.
Emma would have needed a heart to cast the curse and who’s the only character that’s missing in modern day Storybrooke? Merlin. I believe he sacrificed his heart for the greater good, knowing that in doing so, the Darkness that Nimue created could finally be defeated and put to rest.

Emma will become the new Merlin and take on the position of using the ultimate power for good. She will be what he was to all those that came to him, a savior.

******BONUS******

WHAT I LEARNED IN FIRST THOUGHTS.

#1. When your wife is right, it
sort of makes you right.

#2. Everyone must see Galaxy
Quest. It’s better than it
should be.

#3. Robin of Oxley is an
Arthurian legend not many
people have heard of.

#4. Details are Colleen’s job.

#5. Original Fire by Audioslave
is a great song.

That’s it for now, don’t forget to check on the brooms.

OMG! Where to begin? I know, with the comment that I said at the end of the episode…”Colleen was right!!!”

Ok, that being said, I was everywhere with this episode! I can totally agree with Zelena about the onion rings!!!!!! And she earned a bit of respect tonight too. She may be a bit psycho, but I totally got what she was saying and taking Henry’s side (for the moment), not her’s, not Emma’s and not Regina’s, but Henry’s.

Emma. I have never wanted to strangle Emma Swan as much as I have this season!!!! UGH!!! I was happy to see the exchange between she and Merlin at Granny’s.

Belle just keeps showing me week by week why she (only surpassed by Princess Leia) is my favorite Disney Princess. She’s getting pretty good at that magic stuff huh? And sometimes I think maybe she should be the one acting as the town shrink. Sorry Archie. Maybe she should become a motivational speaker…..

One of the best things Merida could have ever done (although when she did it I yelled and threw stuff at the tv) was hit Belle with the rock. No, wait, that was second best. First was actually listening to Belle and showing those know-it-all men in kilts what a girl is made of….bows and arrows! (Sorry, but “Gunpowder and Lead” just didn’t sound right….)

Rumple. No words. Ok, a few….IT’S ABOUT TIME!!!!!! And I flipped out when he pulled the sword. I swear, my neighbors won’t know what to think of me this week after all the yelling I did at my tv between the Bengals game and Once Upon a Time!!! I got watery eyed when he broke the cup, but I see that it eventually lead him to the road of redemption….which happens to be Belle, again. I loved how he told Emma he was gonna stop her! He may still have a bit of The Dark One left in him, huh?

Merlin. I love him. He’s not my Captain Hook, but he’ll do as a back up! LOL! But seriously, he is a wise man and knows what he’s doing. He is the greatest magician/wizard of all time, and yes, could beat Dumbledore is his tree induced exile! But man, does that love thing get in everybody’s way! And when he spoke via the message, that’s when I blurted out “Colleen was right!” Colleen, you should be a Disney Princess, or confidant and co-conspiritor with Belle!!!

Everyone else in Storybrooke. Glad to know you all are finally getting on the same page as the picture of Arthur being, well, Arthur! Now if you all can kindly get to finding Lancelot and Merlin and reducing my wish to strangle Emma Swan, that would be great!

Storybrooke time is going a bit show for me. I’m too impatient for my Hook episode!!!!!

Now for non episode stuff. I have a friend from school who is a Oncer, but hasn’t started season 5 yet and he’s killing me!!! It’s so hard not to blurt stuff out to him! I’ve also been his info on the podcast, conventions, and the merchandise, I thought he was going to hyperventilate when he saw my copy of Red’s Tale. But true to stylish Event Planner form (we stick together!) he won the costume contest he entered for halloween….he was CruFELLA de Ville! I’ll see if I can find a pic and share.

Now I’m off to listen to first thoughts and see if I come up with more things to rack my brain on!

Hugs from Ohio,
Janell

Hey yall…. This was an ok episode. I didn’t care for the Merida storyline to be honest. Im kind of bored with her character and really dont want to see much of her again. It was nice to see Belle be more relevant again and i loved how much this episode did for the Rumbelle Relationship. I feel they have hope again. I thought it would fall flat but i actually loved seeing Rumple be a true hero. I think Emma is 100% evil dark one in storybrooke. I think in the voicemail Merlin was referring to Emma and i think she is full dark one coming for Merlin and he is powerless to stop her because she chose to remain the dark one. I think Emma has Merlin imprisoned in Camelot and she wants Zelina to use the wand to take her back to Camelot so she can kill Merlin. Overall i loved the Rumbelle stuff and Merlin stuff but was bored by Merida…8/10 kilted oafs

Hey y’all, thanks for reading my last e-mail. First of all I want to repeat what I tweeted you today: Merida learning the value of mercy comes from her being shown mercy by Emma. Also the gang and Merlin rescued her which is pretty merciful. Also, did either of you get a serious Darth Vader A New Hope vibe from Merlin in the opening scene? Also, a few plot holes: Why didn’t Merlin just put everyone to sleep? Seems like it would’ve been easier. Anyways, about this episode: I totally loved it, it lends some credence to the idea that it’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission, but it’s ultimately better to ask permission. I love the chemistry between Belle and Merida this episode. Those 2 actors could play a couple in a romantic movie. I really hope Merlin isn’t dead. I’m surprised you didn’t bring up the fact that Hook said that the apprentice is dead which to me is just lame. I love that character and hope he’s not actually dead. Also, do the rules of death differ for magical people? The Dark One was resurrected as was Maleficent, am I missing something here on the “dead is dead” rule in OUAT? Anyways, keep up the good work.

Hi Colleen and Jeff!

Ok, first, I am a terrible fan…So sorry I forgot to say congratulations on your 300th episode!! SO, Happy 302 today!! I’ve been listening you your podcast for over 2 yrs. I look forward to hearing you on Mondays and Sundays, it’s become such a habit and comfort to me. This podcast has the best and most positive outlook and fans, even if we all get “grumpy” once in a while. Every episode is not going to be the bomb digity to everyone, but it’s fun to hear everyone every week, so thank you so much for all you do. There seems to be a lot of negativity about this episode in the fandom…but for us Rumbellers-it was great! I do have to say that I loved so much of it, but then sorda shook my head a lot as well. Colleen, you had wondered about where Merida learned the mercy she showed to the clans and stated they were lucky she had learned it. It was from Emma in the first episode. After they made up from the heart grab, Merida thanked her for teaching her about Mercy. Here are my thoughts on the Bear and the Bow.

Hook, Charming and Merlin are the hottest fighting trio ever. I would be rescued by them any day. Not sure why Merlin didn’t come in first and just magic them away…but getting to see Hook and Charming be so brooding and hot was worth the pause. Glad Merlin recognized Belle’s cleverness as she so cutely pointed out, I loved that, guess there is “something there that wasn’t there before.” Ok, couldn’t resist. What magic that was that on the bars that even Merlin didn’t know or couldn’t use. Question: Where is all this magic coming from? The necklace they gave Regina, the enchanted sword to kill her, and now the bars? Just curious. Merida and Belle are a great femme fetal duo! They worked so well together and watching the parallel stories in Camelot and Storybrooke was interesting. Belle has a way of bringing out the best in everyone she encounters, so it was nice to see the consistency in her character, and really just get to see her have a productive role. I love Belle, so this was very satisfying for me. My Rumbelle heart strings were being pulled all episode. I relate to these characters so much, and have been waiting for an episode that focuses on their relationship-it was sooo great. Belle and Rump on a mission working together and trusting each other…finally!! Though I really feel like Belle was the true hero is this scenario. They really needed to show some growth in their relationship for us to want them to be together and invest in them. When he broke chip I teared up I must say-but I think it’s symbolism for them starting over. He needed to break the old ways and habits and start anew with his journey to be a good man to her, and a hero. I was cringing a bit at this helpless cowardly Rump, but he came thru at the end when he told Emma that there may be heroes in town but “they’re not me.” Drop the mike Rumple-well done sir!! The casting of the Brave characters was so spot on, it made me laugh out loud. And how sad that her father died that way, so fairytale like to have a Dad die like that, but she did avenge him and all her people so it was a good resolution. Her explanation of what happened to her dad was so well done. I know we have to get more story from her since she is in now in Storybrooke, and the last we left her, she was with her people and kingdom. Can’t wait for that, she is a good strong female character, as is Belle finally. Arthur is a jackhole, and thanks for the new word Colleen-I have used it a few times this week. And, a dumb jackhole to boot for leaving the half torched mushroom sitting there, thank god they all know now that he’s a douche. Maybe now they can finally start putting some pieces together. Glad Henry’s authorship role still means something and was so impressed with him saying that it was not his mom that did that to Violet and that she is in there somewhere, I agree Henry!

Things that made me go hmmm…What happened to all boys after Merida knocked Belle out and took her away? No one came to try and save her at all?? Perhaps Merlin knew this was how it was supposed to happen so he let them go, but not very heroic boys. How did Lancelot know Merlin if he’s been in a tree for a millennia…he must have met him thru Nimue? Did he appear to him at some time? Really Scooby gang-you fell for Arthur’s I need to be alone schpeel? Regina is too smart, and should have used, wait….her magic to watch him from inside the vault maybe? All your magical items etc are in that vault besides girlfriend-don’t leave him in there! Again, so glad they have him pegged finally. Where is Merlin and Lancelot in Storybrooke? Next week is going to be so good! Big Love to you both and everyone out there! Have a great week, talk to ya soon, Trace

From Brad,

Hello Jeff and Colleen, please don’t open the car door while the podcast is moving! Now onto the things I learned this week in the episode, The Bear and the Bow

#1. Chip was written off the
show due to artistic
differences. You’ll soon be
able to see him in the
upcoming remake, Alvin and
the Chipped Cups.

#2. Shopping for a gift to
impress Lancelot must be
torture.

#3. If Merdia tells you she has
your back, run!

#4. If you want to see a woman
transform into a fearsome
bear, withhold her
pregnancy cravings.

#5. If you need to know all the
juicy gossip in Storybrooke,
seek out the little bird with
the mop.

#6. You know that you have
issues when the wicked
witch thinks YOUR a bad
influence.

#7. Never upset a red head.

#8. Sometimes you just gotta
kick some arse and ask
questions later.

#9. Rugs should have warning
labels.

#10. Who needs magic when
you can take a massive
bear claw to the face
without even a scratch.

OBSERVATIONS:

This week we all watched Prince Charming, Belle, Captain Hook and Merlin storm a castle and have accepted it as normal. When you actually say it out loud, you realize how freaking awesome that is! Where was this show when I was growing up?This opening scene made me want to see a heroes and villains face off, old school comic book style.

The group not caring about what happens to Gold while he was the Dark One is understandable but not after everyone saw the Darkness leave him. This is totally out of character for them, especially the Charmings who are all about second chances. I realize they want to save Emma but not at the expense of someone else. They already did that with Lily and spent their whole lives trying to make up for it. Having Belle go on her own was wrong and if something happened to her it would have been on their heads. Gold and Belle could have really used their help while being hunted and chased by a manipulated Merida. I felt as if the show sacrificed being true the characters only to move the plot along. This was bad writing and makes no sense after everything that preceded this scene.

BURNING QUESTIONS:

When will we see Merida and Robin team up and take out some villains?

Who enchanted the prison bars in Camelot if Merlin was trapped in a tree? Up to this point all magic has been through Emma, Regina or magic properties that were found in Merlins tower.

We know from the Apprentice that the Darkness needed to be tethered to a person so the dagger could control it. Our theory is that Nimue is the very first Dark One but where does the Darkness itself originate from? The Underworld perhaps?

Take care guys

Brad

From Kathy

Hi Jeff and Colleen,

I thought the episode started off with a great scene. And so much eye candy! Four very handsome men all at once was certainly a treat. Plus Belle who I adore. As a huge reader myself, I enjoyed Merlin’s line to Belle “Well, aren’t you the clever one!”

I generally enjoyed the episode and that it answered some questions for us such as did Emma remember Merlin. I thought teaming up Belle and Merida (Beauty and Brave) was brilliant. They played well off each other and combined their strengths to free Merida’s brothers. Plus Belle finally got another adventure.

I confess I have not seen Brave, so many elements including the Bear slip right past me.

Episode 7 promises to be really good and I want to hear the story of Nimue but I worry something will go terribly wrong in.

I do want to mention as well that Killian Jones has been looking even more handsome in the latest episodes. How is that even possible? Colin O’Donoghue is not only incredibly talented but unbelievably good looking. Sigh.

After hearing about the characters coming back for the 10th episode, I wonder if it revolves around Hades? So far it seems that we have dead (or are they?) characters coming back. I was especially happy the hear Robbie Kay would be back as Pan has been my favorite villain.

That’s the end of my ramblings. I know I forgot some stuff, but oh well.

Til next time.
