How a Hero Breaks a Dark Curse. Emma Frees Storybrooke One Step at a Time.

I always looked at the Dark Curse in Season 1 of Once Upon a Time like an onion.

Yes, Emma did break the curse with a single act at the end, but I thought she did little actions throughout the season to break parts or layers of the curse along the way.

This is my list of what Emma – The Hero, The Savior did to break the Dark Curse in Season 1.

1. Action – Emma received a key to a room at Granny’s Bed and Breakfast and stayed in Storybrooke. She is visiting Storybrooke. (Pilot)

Effect – Time began moving again

1a. Action – Emma takes Mary Margaret’s offer to stay in her spare room in the loft. She is staying in Storybrooke. (Snow Falls)

2. Action(s) – Emma accepts the position of Deputy in Storybrooke (The Price of Gold), and
Accepts and wears the Deputy badge (That Still Small Voice). She is now a part of Storybrooke.

Effect – The crickets returned and the a hole exposed underground caves and some shards from Snow’s coffin from FTL. This begins to expose the truth of FTL to those in Storybrooke.

Jeff’s *Extra Additions* – Emma brings people together, thus giving them their happy ending, even during the curse;
Bringing Ava and Nicholas together with Michael Tillman (True North)
*Possibly* helping Sean and Ashley come together (Skin Deep)

3. Action – Emma grabbed Henry’s book, which made her; (A Land Without Magic)

Effect – Emma now believed that she was the “Savior” and part of Henry’s story

* It is interesting to note that many tried to get her to believe that she was the savior during Season 1, but failed *
– Henry tried many times to make her believe, but failed. Remember Henry letting Emma use Regina’s key that unlocked her apartment door?
– Jefferson tried to explain that the stories were true. (Hat Trick)
– August, a few times tried to tell her to take a leap of faith and believe, but she needed proof. August’s final bit of proof (his leg that was turning to wood)
wasn’t enough, because Emma’s denial was preventing her to see his leg turning to wood (“the truth”). (The Stranger)

4. Action – She kissed Henry on the forehead. The kiss of a Mother’s true love. (A Land Without Magic)

Effect – The Dark Curse was broken

Will Henry be tempted to change the story as The Author?

The last thing we saw in Operation Mongoose Part 2 was Henry declaring that “No one should have that much power” in regards to an Author changing the stories of the OUAT characters to suit their own purposes, and the Apprentice verifying that he has found the best author. We’re good now, right? Smooth sailing right here on out, right?

I don’t think so.

The question remains

Will Henry be tempted to change the story as The Author in OUAT?

Sure, we know that Isaac had an axe to grind when he became the previous Author, but what if he started out an obedient Author, following the rules handed down by The Apprentice, but then trouble came. What if he influenced by a person or force to test his power. What if it was memories of the life he almost had with Cruella? What if someone was sent to Isaac to test his will to follow the rules?

What if the same will happen to Henry?

Will Henry be tempted by someone to change the story he is writing?

He might want to change the story for Regina, because he wants to give her a happy ending from his point of view. He might want to rewrite to ease the difficulty that Zelena and the pregnancy brings to Regina and Robin.

What about Emma as the Dark One, what if Henry is tempted to alter the story to help her?

Perhaps another stranger visits him and mentions other ways he can use his “power,” and even though Henry mentions that it’s against the rules, this stranger may tell him more rules he wasn’t told. Henry may be led down another path one temptation at a time. At that time, he may be more susceptible to change the stories for others.

What if Merlin is the Stranger that will tempt him to test his obedience?

We saw Henry break the quill he chose, so will he need to repair or create a new quill from scratch and complete a dangerous task to do it?

What if Henry is influenced by Emma to change the story to punish those she chooses?

Her parents struck a deal with a Sorcerer’s apprentice to send the darkness away from her

She is special, powerful, and now she is the Dark One

So the question remains

Now that Emma is the Dark One, how will she remember that she is the savior?

We’ve seen this type of storyline before;

Most of Season 1 the inhabitants of Storybrooke didn’t know who they really were, until people, a magical storybook and events began to break their conjured amnesia.

Remember Emma played a very important role as the savior, but now she needs a savior.

In Season 5, Who will be Emma’s savior and remind her of who she really is? Will it be Henry (as he did in Season 1)?

Will it be Hook? Remember, it was Hook that was tasked to go to New York and bring her back to Storybrooke after the “missing year”.

Will voices from the beyond (Graham or Neal) speaking to her and guiding her away from the darkness?

Breaking the grip of the darkness isn’t easy,

“The darkness likes how you taste. It doesn’t mind the bitter. And now that it’s started the meal, it’s gonna finish it. You can no more fly from your fate than can that swan.” Rumpelstiltskin

but we believe that there is hope for Emma.

Since Emma has taken the dark power as a sacrifice to spare Regina, and not yearning for it like Rumpel, will Emma have an easier time of breaking it’s spell?

Will there be an object that will “jog her memory” that could be used? What would it be?

Will Emma wrestle with the goodness and the darkness in her or will the darkness choke out the goodness and make it powerless?

Will good actions by Emma break the power of the darkness one act at a time (Like she broke the curse one action at a time in Season 1)?

Emma gives Cinderella an inspiring speech in “The Price of Gold” about taking your life into your own hands, and showing the world what you are capable of. In “The Outsider”, Belle sought adventure and a new life and decided to make it happen. We each have the power to create our own destiny and change our life, and if we don’t like where our life is headed, it’s up to us to put ourselves on a new road.

We may think we know everything about someone, but everyone has their own tale – a life full of joy, pain, and tragedy. We learned that there is so much to more to Regina than being the Evil Queen, and that Rumple was an ordinary man before he became the Dark One. Even Emma had the idea that her mother had always lived the perfect life of a princess. Just as our beloved characters, everyone has their own complex and complicated story, and in life it’s always important to remember that.
