Another great episode

“I don’t want to be remember as the man who kissed a sleeping princess some years ago” – Really nice sentiment, trying to leave a legacy for yourself but also wanting to be defined by something bigger than yourself, doing “something that matters”, I really liked this moment between Arthur & David.

Really moving scene with Dark Swan & Hook even though I can’t stand this coupling.

I enjoyed Arthur’s & David’s new friendship 🙂 They had a lot in common which is nice.

Yay!!!! Lancelot is alive love his friendship with Snow

Arthur’s a villain? Interesting, I kinda saw it coming, I could sense something unusual going on with him, tied to wanting Excalibur whole/ protecting his Kingdom (Camelot) etc. Hopefully it all works out. I do have a question if Merlin prophesied the savior saving him why didn’t he told Arthur the savior name unless Arthur knows and Arthur is the reason Merlin stuck in the tree to begin with because Merlin also prophesied he not the true King and Arthur want to keep the power maybe Snow and Charming son is because if I remember correctly in a episode of Charmed the first born child was prophesied to wield excibular since Emma is the Savior and equally powerful maybe Snow and Charming son is destined to wield excibular also think putting the sword and dagger won’t make the Dark One more powerful but destroy the darkness when it’s in the right hand I don’t know just a thought

His poor subject though 🙁

Nice to see Rumple awake again, poor Belle though. Jennifer did a great job at the end!”

The writers has said that Emma did cast this curse and had to crushed a heart what if it’s not the her you love the most but the heart you hate the most what if Emma crush half her heart because her heart is thing she hates because it’s turning dark if that not it then So is Emma pretending to be someone to cover the fact that someone is not there? If someone died by her crushing their heart to enact the curse then isn’t that possible?

From Chris Tipton
Hey yall, this was a strong episode, my favorite of the season. I did have issues with it that i will get to. I noticed the change in the title card, instead of the enchanted forest with some object from the episode, it was just the “dark forest”, which i thought was a neat deviation. I loved the return of snowing’s theme in the sheriff’s office. Always great to hear one of my all-time favorite pieces of music. Also, i found Zelena sarcastically miming at Regina hilarious. Even when shes on screen for a short time, she steals the show. I was disappointed with Regina saying that she is the evil queen, i thought she moved past that. Anyway enough rambling, my top 5

5) The Writing…. The dialogue in this episode was great. Any time Jane Espenson is an episode writer you can count on it, and this episode didn’t disappointment. Lines like “hes producing oxygen”, Arthurs comment on always assuming a womans right, and Rumple saying “have you thought about kissing it out”. I love how sidious Rumple refers to himself as we, like Smeagol in Lord of the rings. Very good writing indeed.

4) Holy Convenience Batman… So many conveniences and easy resolutions. Regina puts a question mark in that book for no reason, then she happens to see in storybrooke and remember why she made it. The reliquary of course just shows up to fill a purpose, and then everyone welcome magic item of the week: the Crimson crown. Arthur gave David that seat way too easily. David didn’t do anything to deserve basically the highest honor in Camelot. I know it sounds like im being too harsh, its just i grow tired of such easy resolutions, especially after the fury last week. It is just something I have to expect from this show i guess.

3) The Dwarves… The scene where the dwarves come stomping in to the sheriffs office to complain… I was in stitches. They reminded me so much of like a mean girls troup, just yelling about something of theirs being taken, then they all just turn and walk out… I loved this scene!

2) Emma and her plan… The reveal that Emma plans to make Rumple the hero is awesome. It makes total sense that she would come up with this since Rumple is a blank slate now and she can mold him to be whatever she wants. I do wonder how someone so evil can teach someone to be a hero… But hey, details details right? Speaking of Rumple, it will be great to have him back again. Seeing Robert Carlyle as the dark one is always fun but ive grown to miss seeing him as Mr. Gold.

1) David and Arthur…. David showing his insecurities and vulnerability was nice, and very realistic. I felt like this fell flat at first because weve been over this with him already, but its like real life, no matter how strong we get in certain areas, there is always still the potential to struggle with those same issues. This may explain why he took the chair at the end so easily and didn’t question how easy and convenient it was. I really loved David and Arthurs Bro-ship, which makes Arthurs betrayal all the more painful. On the surface, to me Arthur is doing a wrong thing for the right reason. He just wants to protect his kingdom, which is noble. But when you think about it, hes kind of psychotic. Hes willing to make his subject kill himself to cover his tracks, and his disregard for anyone not from Camelot is ridiculous. I do really enjoy his character and cant wait to delve further into why hes like this and why Lancelot sees him as a villain. Im starting to think it was Arthur who turned Merlin into a tree, or at least maybe he got someone to do it, possibly Morgana. I loved Davids resourcefulness in finding out who the thief was, i was expecting him to call it the holy grail. I have to wonder…how does Arthur know how to drive a truck? I guess being transported in a curse comes with new skills.

Overall, conveniences aside, this was a great episode. Im smitten with dark Emma, Jennifer Morrison is playing this part so well and you can tell shes having fun with it. 9/10 Pictures of inside Zelena

From Chris in Cincy
Hey guys,

Zelena is far less irritating to me when she can’t talk and I wish Regina would have discovered this method to silence her sooner.

I like the idea of Arthur being bad. Usually it’s Merlin who ends up being the shady one (Which he still may be)

My brother told me a funny OUAT related story. He recently got married and his wife is an OUAT fan. He has never seen an episode of OUAT before but he was watching this episode and here is how he described it: “All I know is it has Cameron from House and Claire from Lost and there were knights riding around in modern times.” But he also said that it looked interesting.

Anyway to expand on my Hawkeye comment. Colleen made a comment about superheroes sacrificing family to be supergeroes and in Age of Ultron, the Avengers go to Hawkeye’s house and he has a wife and kids and in his downtime, he lives a peaceful life on his farm. I know what you meant but the comic book nerd in me of course has to pick out the one instance where this isn’t the case. 🙂

Anyway, the Chris stands for Christopher but don’t worry, someone thinking I’m a “she” instead of a “he” based on my name is pretty low on my list of things I get upset about. 🙂

I think that Gwenevere was truly in love with Lancelot, but the secret Arthur is hiding has manipulated her into being with him, wether it’s to save lancelots life or the kingdom. Just a thought. You two are amazing and I enjoy listening to you every week. I’ve been a very quiet supporter but I plan to respond with my thoughts more often.

Hi Jeff and Colleen,

I loved the episode “Siege Perilous”. I think we were getting a lot of setup for some exciting plots to come. When they hung David’s crest on the back of the Siege Perilous I noticed the flowers on it look like the tattoo that Emma has on her wrist. We haven’t gotten the story yet on why and when she got that tattoo. But it seems that it is the flower that would be on her father’s family crest. Below is some information on the Siege Perilous from Arthurian Legend.

In Arthurian legend, the Siege Perilous (also known as The Perilous Seat) is a vacant seat at the Round Table reserved by Merlin for the knight who would one day be successful in the quest for the Holy Grail.
In Thomas Malory’s Le Morte D’Arthur, in an account taken from the Vulgate Queste del Saint Graal, the newly knighted Sir Galahad takes the seat in Camelot on Whitsunday, 454 years after the death of Jesus. The Siege Perilous is so strictly reserved that it is fatal to anyone else who sits in it. Originally, the seat and the grail belonged to Perceval, but the Lancelot-Grail Cycle transferred it to the new Cistercian-based hero Galahad.

In Arthurian Legend the seat is reserved by Merlin. Since Merlin isn’t there can Arthur assign that seat to someone without there being consequences? It seems to me that only Merlin should be able to assign that seat. Will this seat be a perilous seat for David or is he in fact the knight that is supposed to occupy the seat. Nothing is that easy on ONCE! Just saying!

I also love the Dark One storyline and Jennifer Morrison is killing it as the Dark One. She is creepy and sometimes not. The creepy Rumple on her shoulder would be freaking me out popping up all the time. I don’t believe that Emma has totally embraced the darkness. I think she has a plan and that although she is being taunted by the “faux Rumple Dark One”, that she knows exactly what happened in Camelot and that she is still protecting everyone. I believe she is still the Savior but she is pretending to be totally dark. But I do think she has an inner struggle with the darkness and the light that is in her.

I can’t wait to see how this all plays out. I actually love how this show keeps me thinking and guessing and how you can have a theory one week and the next thing you know your theory has totally changed. I’m glad I don’t always know what’s coming next. I love this show… My favorite show ever!

I also love your podcast and listen to your Initial Reactions and Analysis every week. Thanks for being my entertainment while I am at work. I am a graphic designer and I listen while I design. You guys are awesome!

Hi Colleen and Jeff!

Thanx for doing 2 podcasts in one day…you did better than you thought Jeff…very minimal word stumbling the second time around-well done Sir! The first time I watched this episode I thought it was just ok, but after a rewatch…it was great, we did get a lot of information and plot driving goodness. Seems like everyone is going to get an episode this arc, very cool. Here are my thoughts on Siege Perilous.

Best quote about unknown technology ever on once upon a time: “I have this picture from up inside Zelena.” My husband doesn’t watch the show, but he did happen to be walking by when that line was given so innocently…he stopped and said, wait-what did he just say? I then had to explain that Robin Hood was talking about the sonogram of his baby he was tricked into having with the wicked witch of the west that impersonated his dead wife. I got the sideways puppy look that happens whenever you try to explain this show to a non-watcher, but it made me laugh! I hope everyone writes in this quote cuz it never gets old, and the more times Jeff has to read it the funnier it will be!

I knew Arthur was shady…if that’s really Arthur of course! It’s hard to know who is really who on this show. I feel like Arthur is trying too hard, something is just off. Lancelot said “Camelot is not what it seems.” I don’t have this theory completely figured out in my brain, but we’ll see. This would explain how he was able to pull the sword like you asked Jeff, but now is a villain. I also want to know if maybe the sword itself is influencing him somehow? I think that Nimewe has something to do with this too, Merlin was trapped in the tree by Arthur or Nimewe. But, maybe he trapped himself in the tree to protect everyone knowing the savior was coming someday. This is all so fun, like season one, theorizing again about characters and plot. I just love it!

I am so proud of Hook! I think. I thought he was going to cave, but he held his ground and refused to go dark, he wants his Emma back and I love his strength in the face of her darkness…it was a powerful scene. Reminds me what Snow said last season. “Heroes do what is right, not what is easy”. Then again…if the naughty Rumple’s monologue from last week is right, Hook not loving and supporting her may snuff out any light left and help her go dark. It’s the people that you love and that love you that keeps dark ones from succeeding, so I’m not really sure what’s truly at play here. I thought Hook was the hero Emma needed, but its Rumple!! Very interesting, I am so intrigued as to where that is going. Rumple and Emma’s role reversal is great. I love David on a quest…he really is great at the adventure stories. Though I feel bad for him, Arthur only gave him that seat to keep an eye on him and get information from the group, ya know-“keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer.” But, one can never go wrong with 2 hot guys, a truck chase and jousting with a 2 by 4! I do think this bromance will cause trouble for Snow and Charming. If Charming trusts Arthur and Snow trusts Lancelot, it could put a wedge between them, Charming knows the real story and may even get jealous…IF that’s even Lancelot of course!! I did not like the scene with Regina and Zelena. I liked the acting, but not seeing Regina go all evil Queen on her. She’s better than that, but sisters will make ya crazy at times. Maybe Zelena got the bean to try and get to Oz with the baby? I think Arthur will use David to get info and tear the group apart, and maybe even Arthur will use Zelena. If he finds out the baby drama, he could persuade her and use her magic to his advantage somehow as well. Or…he’s gonna get that dagger somehow, and control Emma to do God knows what to her family! Could go on-but this is crazy long already-Sorry! This is a great season so far!

Only a few things that made me go hmmm…Arthur really is a quick study with driving! He didn’t even know what a truck was and suddenly he’s Arthur Andretti? It was a fun scene though. Regina takes bad notes. How about a quick “can we talk to merlin with this mushroom? That would have been way more helpful. And why is everyone treating Emma like a child in Camelot? It’s bothering me. Emma has said numerous times, “No one saves me but me”, that’s why I still think she’s in there playing both sides somehow.

Big love to you both and all the Oncers…I can’t wait to hear all your thoughts and theories everyone!!! Talk to ya next week, Trace

Hello Jeff and Colleen, here’s a little advice, if you ever have the misfortune of being turned into a tree, keep all your partners limbs attached, they’ll thank you later. Now, unto to the things I learned this week on the episode, Siege Perilous.

#1. Dopey’s productivity level
“leaves” much to be desired.

#2. Putting your name on that last
piece of cake in the company
fridge means absolutely
nothing to the Dark One.

#3. Having Leroy as a friend can
cause high blood pressure.

#4. Granny’s diner needs a man
with a mop.

#5. Having temporary amnesia,
wearing strange clothes and
waking up in a place that’s
not your home could either
be a new curse of the after
effects of Doctober.

#6. If you’ve never driven a
vehicle in your life, the only
lesson you need is, speed
is feet and direction is hand.

#7. The black knight really is
invincible!!

#8. Never Cut corners when
building your crimson crown
bog bridge.

#9. Robin better learn real quick
how to password protect his
phone.

#10. Our world has something in
common with Camelot. We
both have shrooms that let
us talk to trees.

THEORIES:

Arthur knew the toadstool would help communicate with Merlin, yet he takes it from David. What if Merlin is actually appearing as Arthur and the real one is trapped in the tree. Another possibility could be a villain like Madam Mim masquerading as Arthur so that Merlin is not be free.

Have a great show

From Marilyn
Hi Jeff, Colleen, (and Lady)

When Emma asks everyone if they were sure that they didn’t want her to wiggle her nose to get Merlin out of the tree, I wonder if that was a little nod to the old TV show Bewitched? Because as far as I remember, that’s the only witch who ever cast spells by twitching her nose.

I felt so sorry for Killian in this episode, the way Emma set out to manipulate him for her own ends. Emma knew that he was the only one who knew Rumple before he became the dark one so that there was a chance that he had something in his possession that had touched Rumple before he was possessed by the darkness. So when he admitted to her that he was the villain in the scenario on his ship with Rumple trying to keep his family together and that his cutlass had touched him, she knew she had what she wanted and became her most flirtatious to get her hands on that cutlass, grabbing it away from him as she reminded him of when she had taught him to fight during the time when he was cowardly Hook.

The saddest part was when he said he loved her, in the past tense, and then asked her if he was swimming home or sailing home. It showed that he knew she was so enveloped in the darkness that he felt she was capable of killing him at that moment in time.

And then, later when Emma was in the basement room talking to the dark one, he made the comment that finding the cutlass was lucky. She replied in a completely emotionless voice: “It wasn’t luck, I worked hard for this.” Boy, that was cold and ruthless. It makes you wonder how she will be changed as a person if and when they manage to remove the darkness from her.

Take care,
Marilyn

In our OUAT The Price Analysis in our Once Upon A Time Podcast Main Show there are many parts to take a closer look at within the main storyline;

[subscribe]

Regina the Hero

Regina is experiencing one of the down sides of being a “good” person that isn’t ruled by their passions and revenge. She allowed herself to be part of a team, and as Season 5 unfolds – she is now the only member who has magical power. Being a hero is just like being Heavy Weight Champion Boxer, you can’t rest on the accolades alone, you will be challenged all along the way to get and keep the tile.

She is being tested to become the savior – to save Emma. She is now all alone. Anyone who could help her have been incapacitated. Regina is now on the Joseph Campbell’s Heroes Journey, for all the right reasons, but to save Emma, her friends and keep her Happy Ending, she must face the path of becoming a Hero that includes temptations to go back to being a Villain.

Hook the Hero

Hook feared being pulled back into the darkness, and the closer he gets to Emma, the more he will be tempted and tested. Is Hook strong enough to stay untouched by the Darkness and rescue Emma, too?

vlcsnap-2015-10-10-05h43m35s146

What is The Fury?

Is the Fury an Angry Tree? So many people are trapped in trees, is the Fury that kidnapped Robin, perhaps Sneezy or even Merlin? What if The Fury is being used to lead Regina down the path toward being a hero?

vlcsnap-2015-10-10-05h41m41s27

Or is The Fury part of the dream Regina had in ‘Poor Unfortunate Soul’ 4X16?

In ‘The Price’, Regina told The Fury, “You’re not taking him anywhere!”

vlcsnap-2015-10-10-06h59m42s183

In ‘Poor Unfortunate Soul’, the Evil Queen Regina told the present Regina, “Get away from him!”

vlcsnap-2015-10-10-05h48m58s31

It may be a stretch but it almost seemed like even back in Season 4 that her redeemed Hero self was being tested. Is she fighting her old self?

Can we trust the New Group from Camelot?

We know Percival can’t be trusted, but Arthur did help save Regina’s life from being paid.

News:

MMB’s Front Yard in Steveston is getting some major work.

A small patch of public greenspace in Steveston was scheduled to lose part of its tree cover this week.

A total of five trees, including a mature oak that is roughly 70-feet tall, were to be chopped down for re-development of the site beside the Steveston Post Office and Moncton Street boardwalk for a Japanese-themed garden.

“A pair of two old ladies sitting on a bench nearby told me the woman was probably crying about the trees,” Hazama said. “Who knows what it really was. Maybe she had a special connection with the trees. Maybe she met her boyfriend there.”

Hi Jeff & Colleen.

Pond, Camelot, Emma & Rumple scenes in the forest and probably the forest scenes in Storybrooke – Burnaby Central Park.

A short distance away at Roberts Burnaby Park – Emma & Rumple, Merida scenes.

Both parks just a few miles away from the studio lot we visited on your first trip.

I agree … like in many mythologies as Manny and I discussed during season 1 or 2, trees play key roles throughout the series.
Spiritual trees like the Kalpa Tree http://listverse.com/2014/03/24/10-amazing-legends-of-mythological-trees/.

BTW … the pictures I sent you before re: horses in Steveston was from this past week’s episode.

From Aleana

Really enjoyed it! 🙂 The ending Dark One monologue was haunting but powerful,”the pull of the family we so desperately to protect ” “the friendships that make it possible to forget who we use to be” “the magic that threatened to undue our most evil things” “the love that refuses to give up on us.” “We can’t escape the reach of the light”.

Ooo, interesting! leaving Storybooke, across the town line, makes you trapped in a tree, like Merlin!

LOL, loved Regina’s sass, “Your lucky your not locked in Granny’s Freezer”

Haha, “How the hell are we going to give a tree a Taco”

Emma’s place! Nice place but it was empty. You can absolutely tell Jennifer is having a lot of fun in this new role.

I loved that Snow and Charming taught Regina how to dance and then questioned her Evil Queen dress choice lol.

Loved that Snow got to experience the ball with Emma and they both look stunning, 🙂

Haha, Charming giving Henry girl advice, “Your from another land, your mysterious”. Violet and Henry bonding over music on his iPod 🙂

The entire ball scene was lovely, very Disney movie-esque.

The Dark Swan and Regina scene was excellent, really great acting. I loved how everyone banded together with Regina to stop the Fury I just hope it’s a group effort in saving the town and Emma not just one person 🙂 The promo for next week looks heartbreaking.

From Chris Tipton

Hey yall… I felt like this was a pretty average episode. Had some good moments but pretty slow in alot of places, but alas, my top 5

5) Henry and Violet… I loved this. Henry finally has a love interest (other than Cinnabon)…adorbs!! I wonder if they’re memories might not be gone, they just need something to jog them, as Violet said she felt like she heard that song before. I did feel like she took seeing such an alien piece of technology a little too calmy… Also we need a ship name for them… Violet heart anyone?

4) The Fury… Im not educated at all on Arthurian Legend but i thought the fury is from Greek mythology? Maybe yall can correct me on this. It also reminded me alot of the shadow from Neverland. I was extremely underwhelmed with the resolution to the fury. They didn’t explain at all how they defeated it.

3) The new Curse… Yawn another curse. I am relieved there is a new effect though to leaving the town. Since they turn into a tree, and Merlin was in a tree, maybe whoever put Merlin in that tree has something to do with this curse. Maybe it wasn’t Emma at all that cursed them back to Storybrooke. If it was, who knew she had a thing for trees? Id also like to know how emma cursed everyone to storybrooke, if in fact it was her. If she just did it without needing to use all ingredientszit invalidates all of season one basically. What could she have possibly sacrificed that she loves most. Its clearly Hook right now and hes just fine.

2) King Arthur…. Im really digging his character. Having him and other people from Camelot show up in Storybrooke was awesome. I do wonder if this curse pulled all of Camelot to Storybrooke. I suspect Arthur isn’t as Benevolent as we think, especially with him spying on them with the necklace.

1) Emma, Hook and Regina… I loved Hook in this episode. Im very pleased he resisted Emmas advances. Its a shock to me that Emma actually enjoys being the dark one now and she feels its who she is. I found it so hilarious Regina controlling Emma with the dagger. It seemed so campy, it reminded me of the movie Ella Enchanted where Ella had no choice to obey whatever command someone gave her. The moment Emma and Snow shared in Camelot (Which reminds me… Lady Mary-Margarrete? When has she been called this in the enchanted forest) makes it all the more devastating that Emma has embraced the darkness. Their relationship had come so far from the end of season 4. So i have to wonder why everyone was freaking out about Regina needing to see a doctor… She can heal herself with a wave of her hand. Regina looked amazing in her ball gown… Possibly my favorite look yet on her. I find the idea that Emma healing Robin having the price of a life ridiculous. How many times have we seen people healed through magic and its never cost a life… I feel like this was just a cheap plot device to make Regina be seen as a savior. Seeing Emma start to turn Gold was awesome… I really hope we end up seeing her fully gold. I liked the ending. I wonder if the dark one reuniting Excalibur and the dagger makes the dark one all powerful and kills everyone they love so there is nothing to bring them back, this is how the light is snuffed out. I didn’t like this episode quite as much as the premier simply because of the ridiculous fury resolution.

From Chris from Cincinnati

Hi Jeff and Colleen,

I’m only halfway through your initial reaction to The Price as I type this so my apologies if some of this was mentioned already.

I am the world’s worst at remembering the names of new characters (How I can follow Game of Thrones is anyone’s guess) but when Henry met up with his princess in Storybrooke, all I could think of was Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. All that was missing was Henry referring to someone in Camelot as a “Royal Ugly Dude” 🙂

When Disney bought the rights to the Muppets, did they get the rights to all of Jim Henson’s properties? If they did, I’m wondering if when Excalibur is joined with the Dark One dagger, the Dark One and The Savior will join together to form a completely new being as in Jim Henson’s “The Dark Crystal”

Keep up the great work!!

Chris in Cincinnati (To further distinguish myself from the plethora of Chris’ listening out there)

Hi again,

Colleen, probably an exception that proves your point about superheroes and families, but what about Hawkeye in Avengers: Age of Ultron? 🙂

From Trace

Hello again Colleen and Jeff,

We made it another week, and another great episode. I have one thing to get out of the way, a question for all of you. Do you think that they are messing with fate by lying about the prophecy…let me clarify here…Merlin said clearly that the Savior would be the one to save him…being “appointed” the savior is different than actually being the one. Just because Emma is the dark one does not take away the fact that Emma was born the Savior. I would have loved to see her able to still use light magic as the savior, but struggle with the dark and use dark magic when she’s being controlled by the dark one. I think messing with the prophecy is going to be a huge issue-as I said last week-Regina is doing this with good intentions, what she thinks is right, but the consequences go horribly wrong-what do you all think?? I think Emma has struggled for 4 seasons with being the savior so now she is saying-“you all want to be the savior-let’s show you what that’s really like to be the savior”. Can’t wait to hear what you think. Here we go with the Price.

The relationships and dynamic between all the characters this week was so great. I just loved the dialogue with Emma and Regina, and OHH- Charming teaching Regina to dance…I had the feely feels for sure!! Belle and Hook had great conversations as well. All of them dancing at the ball so happy was so cute. A new ship? I’ve heard Violet Believer…so cute!!! Ok, so now we turn into a tree when we cross the town line? Regina saying “well, that’s a new one” made me laugh so hard. Emma saving Robin was so good for Regina, Emma using dark magic, not so good. I actually felt bad for Percival-until he tried to kill her, he did have a reason to be so upset…we all got a reminder that the Evil Queen was very, very evil, and her redemption has been great to witness. What’s with Excalibur?? I think Arthur and Guinevere need it to stay King and Queen and I believe that when it’s reunited by goodness it can get rid of the dark one, but…if done by the dark one…total darkness and no light…yah-that would suck! I think Emma is playing both sides here somehow, just haven’t figured it all out yet. She sort of actually helped Regina this episode in a sort of back handed way-she didn’t send the Fury, but she did warn her it was coming and helped her solve it. Just thinking out loud I guess. Oh wait…Colleen, I loved your theory about Merlin and the dark one being brothers! If that’s the case…maybe Blue is their mother!!!???? That would explain a lot wouldn’t it?? Just because your kid is evil, doesn’t mean you don’t love and try to protect them both regardless, which would account for some of her shadiness right?? Love it!

Things that made me go hmmm…Regina could have fixed sneezy the whole time and yet the poor lil guy spent like 2 days as a hood ornament? And…we can undo each others magic now? Why did Regina have such a hard time changing Marion back if she could have just undone the magic? No one is worried that Charming is going dark even though he killed Percival without a thought. Do you think if he had heard the backstory he would have been more mercival and just knocked him out or something? Ok…again-where’s Lilly? Is she hanging out in that Italian restaurant we’ve only seen once with Will? Can’t wait for that story to start to unfold. Big Love to you both and all the Oncers out there!! Told you everyone…just take it all in and love the show for all it gives us every week and don’t worry so much about a few misses…the hits are worth all of it!! Talk to you all next week!!!

HI Jeff and Colleen!

So nice to be back with you guys for season 5 of Once Upon a Time. I love this new season and enjoy your in depth research into many of the aspects of the storyline. I had a little Season Premier Party with a few of my friends and I will share those photos with you at the end of the email. I watched last season’s finale in The Cincinnati area with Daniel and Jenny Lewis, Jeremy Laughlin, and some other Oncer’s. It was so much fun watching with them.

I love your podcast and appreciate the time and effort you put into it. Time is our most precious commodity and is priceless. Thank you for sharing your time with me and other Oncer’s who have a love of this show as you do. I’m looking forward to this being an amazing season and can’t wait for the next episode and your next podcast.

Big Love, Hope and Happily Ever Afters to you and Colleen!

Hello Jeff and Colleen, take this advice from a great king, whenever having someone interviewed on the podcast, it is very unbecoming to try and kill your guest. Now onto the things I learning this week on the episode, The Price.

#1. Now is the perfect
opportunity for Sneezy to get
that chiseled jaw.

#2. Right in the middle of the
road is a dopey place to put a
tree.

#3. Henry needs to realize he’s
summoning the Dark One, not
Beetlejuice. (Emma Swan,
Emma Swan, Emma Swan).

#4. Even Doc can’t help sneak a
peek when Regina changes
into a revealing dress.

#5. Granny’s freezer doubles as a
jail cell.

#6. The greatest magical ability
in any realm, is the power
to shut someone up.

#7. When taking on a Fury, make
sure to equip a helmet.

#8. The price for saving everyone
from an alternate universe, is
an iPod.

#9. Whenever a man asks “may I
cut in” make sure he is
referring to dancing.

#10. The Fury hasn’t learned that
you never cross the
streams.

OBSERVATIONS:

If Emma ever comes in contact with Merida’s brothers, it would be a new twist on Goldilocks and the three bears.

Regina led the town for 28 years as mayor and even though she was hiding the fact that she was the evil queen, she still did a great job. This makes her more qualified than anyone to lead the town and the metamorphosis she has went through gives her the motivation to be the perfect savior.

Why did true love’s kiss not work on Emma? Listening closely to Belle, she explains that true love’s kiss DID work the first time but because Rumple chose power over love, at that moment the Darkness forever regained it’s grip on him. Emma must have also made this choice while in Camelot. After healing Robin and kissing Hook, Rumple asks why her kiss didn’t stop her hand from turning gold, evidence that she liked the power. As Belle pointed out, “A curse isn’t a curse when the inflicted wants it.”

BURNING QUESTIONS:

If Merlin is the most powerful sorcerer in all the realms, could it be possible that he turned himself into a tree in order to fulfill prophecy?

If Emma created this new curse, how did she get around sacrificing the one you love the most? Which brings me to another question, is this really Emma’s curse or could it possibly be Merlin’s?

Camelot only knows what will happen with Merlin’s prophecies but not how. Does Merlin know how or is his prophetic power just like Rumple’s?

Did Merida get taken to Storybrooke?

THEORIES:

Putting Excalibur back together may release the Darkness from it’s limitations. Without a dagger to control the Dark One, nothing would stand in it’s way.

Have a great podcast!

Notes:

Sneezy is still a part of Team 7 – on type of the van

It’s great that even though Sneezy was turned to stone by Emma, they still take him on their adventures in the Team 7 van. All the while, still trying to find a way to reverse the curse and return him to “Substitute Sheriff” when there isn’t one around.

Grumpy voices concern of “one of them” now becoming the newest Dark One.

Grumpy has a valid point, Emma was one of the Storybrookians who knew all the secrets, helped destroy and drive off the monsters (including the Trio of Terror), she knows way too much about them and now can use that information against them. With all that information and power, even Grumpy doesn’t trust Regina to protect the town.

Grumpy’s hesitation in Regina’s power and leadership began to eat away at her belief in herself.

If you wondered what would happen when someone crossed the line after this newest curse, Grumpy picks a Guinea Pig to try it out.

I really loved the “Not it” scene with Team 7. Dopey isn’t Dopey at all. He had his ‘Not it!’ note ready. It turns out that when Dopey crossed the town line, he turned into the tree.

As we learn later, Merlin somehow is magically “trapped” in a tree also. Is this a random coincidence, or is the same person that caused Dopey to become a tree was the same person that caused Merlin to become a tree as well?

Love is Stronger than Fear

When Charming was finally honest and admitted that Emma was the Dark One, Arthur was quick to answer that the only thing to do about the Dark One is to destroy it. Charming and Snow continued the revelation by telling Arthur that the Dark One was their daughter.

Arthur feared what he knew was dangerous to he and his kingdom, but Snow and Charming love Emma so much that they set aside her being the Dark One and do their best to keep harm from her as they try to find a way to set her free from the Darkness that will surely take her over if they wait too long.

To someone like Cora (a woman driven by passion, high emotion and quick action), love is weakness, but as we have seen before the love of a Mother (or a Parent or Parents) could be strong enough to free Emma. We will see if Snow and Charming are right or if Arthur is right. My bet is on Snow and Charming and their love for Emma.

Perfection! Jennifer Morrison was bloody amazing as The Dark Swan at the end. Just wow, I felt her icy presence. They way she turned ever so quickly to Sneezy and asked “who are you?” are then turned him to stone, that was excellent. Overall, what a beautiful episode. I want more 🙂

The opening scene is intriguing. I do love how they showed the animated Sword in the Stone, love that movie. Very cool twist, the Dark One’s dagger is the extension of Excalibur, I never thought of that. Wow, so cool. That’s maybe why Merlin might have said, don’t take out the Sword from the Stone.

I adored Merida, Amy Manson has done utter justice to her. Her accent is gorgeous and it’s her real one which makes it even better! I can’t believe King Fergus has passed, I really loved him on Brave. Her poor, wee brothers, I hope there as adorable as they were on the movie. Loved the nod to the movie about her mother being a bear 🙂 I loved Merida’s mannerisms and her quick, snappy dialogue, very reminiscent of that from the movie. I also like how she thanked Emma for showing her the darkness, that was meaningful because we all have darkness.

Loved how they incorporated the will-o’-the-wisp into the storyline. I’m very pleased with that. Loved all the Wizard of Oz references, I adore that movie. Loved that the tornado took away Granny’s!

Regina and Hook both had quite funny lines.

Emma in the Enchanted Forrest was great, I really saw her struggle with darkness in the way she moved her eyes, truly expressive.

I understand why Hook was so adamant about wanting to save Emma, I’m glad it all worked out. I also am very happy, everyone, for once is coming along, they finally addressed that. No more sidelining of characters, hopefully 🙂

I am a major Beauty and the Beast fan of the Disney Animated Classic, it’s a major part of my childhood and the way the Rose Jar was utilized really pleased me.

Zelena was wicked! She and her sister do have something in common, wanting love. She now has a son and I think that’s going to make her happy so hopefully they can work out their problems or maybe she can go “somewhere over the Rainbow, way up high, there’s a land that I’ve heard of once in a lullaby…”

From Chris

Hi Jeff and Colleen,

First the obligatory Star Wars references:

– Nice Force choke, Emma.

– For all the times he tried to convince Emma to use her power, Rumple should have just been named Palpatine in this episode.

Now for a few other similarities to other works:

For anyone familiar with the show Dexter, Rumple now seems to be filling the role of Emma’s “Dark Passenger” which was the name Dexter gave to his internal impulse to be a serial killer.

When I saw Emma’s outfit at the end of the episode, I immediately thought of Pinhead from the Hellraiser series. I highly doubt that was what they were going for but it fits because it’s tough to get much darker than Pinhead.

Keep up the great work!

Chris

From Chris from NC

Hey yall!! Its good to be back!!
This was a great episode, i didn’t like it as much as last years premier but still good. Before my top 5 i have one gripe, I grow tired of all the ret-coning they do with Emma, you mean to tell me all this time she never said anything about a mysterious man telling her she would have the opportunity to remove Excalibur? Doubtful. But, enough negatively. My top 5

5) The Storybrooke gang as im calling them…. Im so glad they finally gave more information about the wand that the apprentice used to imprison the author, although i do question why it was crafted with light and dark… Maybe Merlin isn’t as benevolent as we’d like to think. Im sad to see the apprentice go. Timothy Webber is amazing and i hope to see him again in flashback. I cant believe they needed Zelena to them how the portal worked. They should know this. Hooks reaction to Henry breaking the quill was probably my favorite part of the episode!! He literally face-palmed 😂. Zelena is playing a much bigger role then i expected, which im glad of. Rebekah Mader is amazing!! It was hilarious that they call out their own continuity error with Robin realizing Regina was Zelena but not realizing it with Marion. I don’t understand at all

4) The Rose from Beauty and the Beast!! So many feels!!

3) Camelot…. I love the reveal that the dagger was made from Excalibur. I can wait to learn more about Camelot. Having Lancelot back is nice.

2) Merida….I think they did such a good job with Merida, and the actress playing her did phenomenal, although i feel her hair should be bigger 😁. Her and Emma play really well of each other. I think she will be a great asset to the show and i hope she sticks around for a long time.

1) Dark one Emma….Seeing Emma come out of the dak one pit was so amazing, and her having dark one Rumple as her “Darth Sidious” is so fun and i love that they did it this way. Its a relief that Emma was trying to fight the darkness. True to her character in my opinion. The reunion between Emma and the storybrooke gang was awesome, so glad they talked Emma out of killing Merida. Emma giving Regina the dagger was tear worthy. I love where their relationship has come. The ending was a downer, im disappointed that they are re treading the same story with lost time and memories. Dark one Emma looks great though… This is gonna be fun!!
I give this premier 8.25/10 onion rings

From Janice

Hello, Jeff and Colleen,

I’m not sure you remember me, it’s Janice Marie, (If you need help remembering, I’m the girl you’ll wished “Happy Birthday” to on November 8th, the night that recorded for one of your main shows for season 4). It has been a loooong while, haha!

I just wanted to share with you some of my thoughts on the season 5 premiere of “Once Upon a Time.”

-McKenna Grace at little Emma, super cute! I can totally see her growing into Abby Ross, who grows into Jennifer Morrison. Amazing casting as always.
-The BIG REVEAL of the Dark One dagger turning out to be the last piece of Excalibur…. WHAT!!!!! Probably the BIGGEST plot twist since Darth Vader revealing he was Luke’s father!!!
-I’m not sure that I can trust Merlin. He doesn’t seem like a good guy to me. He looks, to me, like he had something to do with the creation of the Dark One dagger, etc.
-Did you guys notice that Henry was protecting Roland inside Granny’s diner? Oh, my goodness!!! It was just too darn cute, I felt as though I was going to get ADORABETES!!!!
-Lastly, seeing Dark One Emma at the end of the episode!!! She looked AMAZING!!! I love that he voice was significantly low for the part!!! Amazing acting choice that Jennifer made there. (Also, everyone looked STUNNING in their Camelot attire, ESPECIALLY Henry, who looked like a sort of a knight-in-training)

In my opinion, this was one of the strongest season premieres that the show has had so far.

Keep up the great work! It’s good that Once is back but it’s EVEN GREATER that your podcast is back and I get to listen to you guys again after MONTHS of hiatus.

Your biggesy fan,

Janice Marie

From Trace

Welcome back Colleen and Jeff!

Few things before I dive into this excellent season premiere! I was having a terrible Monday…but…there you were! So nice to have you back, and hear the 2 of you again chatting about a new season…it just turned my day around, thanks so much for that. And, a shout out to both of you!! One of the reasons I love your podcast is because you’re a great couple, and it comes through. I heard you sent gift baskets to other podcasters and it made me smile!! Proves why I tune in and listen to you twice every week-that was so great-you 2 are awesome! Ok, Roney love fest over… let’s get into the Dark Swan!

OMG…OMG!! This was so great and so worth the wait! First off, let’s get to the elephant in the room…we had a mind swipe again…not sure why everyone is groaning tho…it’s a OUAT trope yes, but it works here so well!! We can’t keep flashing back to the enchanted forest pre curse, we’ve done that for 4 seasons and we’re out of adventures there. This new time jump and mind swipe allows us to continue the flashbacks we love, and now we see all new adventures. We can see the story unfold about how and why Emma went dark in Camelot thru the eyes of our favorite characters. This is what we all love about the show right?!! So chillax everyone and just enjoy…it’s going to be great!

I think Merlin’s visit to Emma in the theatre was for-shadowing to our entire group, that doing the right thing doesn’t always get a good result. I think were going to see our cast of hero’s doing what they all think is right thing to save Emma, yet…didn’t turn out so well as we see the last 5 minutes of the episode, (which was delicious by the way!) J-mo played the dark swan so great! I cant wait to find out what she means by “you failed me”. Colleen, loved your theory on the grey relating to a swan-her smoke was even grey if you noticed when she poofed away at the end. I have my theories but Ill wait a few episodes to see things unfold. The dagger is part of excaliber…? Oh, that was brilliant!! Leroy’s speech was super cute and poignant to say the least. Merida was perfection, Emma catching arrows was one of the best scenes, as was her taking Meridas heart-so compelling. Naughty Rumple being the devil on her shoulder, so great. Emma giving Regina the dagger, big feels. Zelena does wicked like no other-awesome. I could go on and on-I loved everything about this episode and can’t wait for Sundays!!

Things that made me go hmmm…I loved the knod to Beauty and the beast with the rose, but now she’s got this giant glass rose to hall around, and not practical at all in a tornado. And why didn’t Blue go along? You’d think she’d be a great asset with her knowledge and power! Just sayin. Where is Lilly? That should be a great confrontation, I hope we still get to see the whos her daddy drama unfold here. Why did they bring Zelena? Lock her in the cell with a protection spell and let her be to meditate for awhile. If she gets near a knife again who knows what would happen! Oh, way to peer pressure a teenager Hook! I get that he’s desperate to save Emma, but let’s hope he’s learned from that epic fail. He’s so cutie cute I’ll forgive him for that!

Big love oncers!! Glad to be back and can’t wait to hear all your emails and theories-it helps me get through the week! Talk to you all next week! Trace

From Dan Hyatt

Greetings Colleen and Jeff!! So glad to venture to Storybrooke again with you two! Here are my thoughts/comments on the show!

(1) The main plotline sounds so much like a Charlie Daniels song, “The Devil went up to Storybrooke, and he’s looking for a soul to steal. He found Swan, he’s a son of a gun, and he’s willing to “make a deal”!!!”

(2) Emma’s hooded clothes reminded me (colorwise) somewhat of leaked photos of what “Old Luke” will look like in Episode VII, light shaded/ off white.

(3) I agree Jeff, the Dark One SOOO reminided me of Palpatine from Episode III. . . . “DO IT!!!”

(4) I’m sorry, but “Merlin’s Wand”?? Will at some point will we see any Harry Potter references, any Hippogriffs??

(5) Disney reference. . .. getting lost in the woods. . . walking around in circles. . . . Was that the same forest that Pooh and Piglet got lost in??

(6) Another Harry Potter reference, the sword in the stone reminded me of the Griffindor sword that Harry pulled out of the hat in the 2nd movie. . . .same red ruby stone on the hilt, and writing on the blade.

(7) Did I hear a “Wilhelm scream” when Emma choked the peddler? 😉

(8) Finally. . .. back to the 80’s. . . .Dark One giving Emma “a taste”. . .. Hewey Lewis and the News everbody, “I want a new drug! One that won’t make me sick. . . . One that won’t make me crash my VW Bug. . .. or make me feel three feet thick!!!”

Can’t wait for the next episode!! Hold on to your hats “dearies” … we’re in for a bumpy ride!!

Peace Always,

Dan Hyatt, Boston MA

From Brad

Alright guys, we’re back for season 5! So sit back, relax and don’t let anyone ruin you chi.
Now, unto the things I learned this week on the episode, The Dark Swan.

#1. Even a wizard needs a part
time job.

#2. Mr Gold is actually just in a
deep sleep after suffering
from decades of insomnia.

#3. Always be sure to secure the
condiments before traveling
to another realm.

#4. Oftentimes a good gut punch
is required BEFORE showing
mercy.

#5. When you’re hungry for
power, break yourself a piece
of that Ex-cali-bur.

#6. After twenty eight years in
Storybrooke, still nobody
knows the name of the man
with the mop.

#7. Sneezy likes to wear woman’s
clothing.

#8. Dr. Whale should seriously
recommend that everyone in
Storybrooke start taking
Prevagen immediately to
boost memory function.

#9. Rumple is not a fan of the
Scottish accent.

#10. Whiplash is a common side
effect of “wee magical love
taps.”

BURNING QUESTIONS:

When Rumple became the Dark One, did Zoso appear in his mind to temp him?

What’s the story about how Lacelot is still alive? Up to this point, we were led to believe that Cora had killed him.

When Bae and Rumple spoke of forces greater than themselves who conspire to make things happen, could that greater force have been Merlin? Both he and the Apprentice knew the fate of Emma and Lily. So why not every other person in all the realms?

That’s all for now

-Brad
