Thanks for listening. Jeff and Colleen.
Just started to listen to your podcast and am making my way though the older episodes. Currently listening to the Cinderella episode. A few pieces of feedback though–
1) I’d like it if when Colleen did the recap if she recapped fairytale land first in its entirely, then Storeybrooke– because technically FTL is “the past” and it makes more sense to hear it’s story in entirely first then to hear the “present” next. She did this in episode 1 and I actually remembered more this way then the confusing mishmash the later episodes had in the recaps.
2) I hate it when you bring up Lost. I never watched the show and your references to it just bug. While a few call outs here and there are fine (ie. 8:15), the endless “connections” you make grate (no offence). Like saying that Kathryn’s name *must* be a connection to “Kate” from Lost. Why can’t Kathryn be a Kathryn because it’s a common name? Rather than a Lost connection? This is a separate show with separate writers.
3) Personally I think Thomas (Ella’s prince) is actually the frog prince. He disappeared around a well and left behind his clothes. It would make sense if he was a frog nearby which is why she didn’t see him when she was looking for him.
4) I’d like to hear more discussion about the episode with infused opinions. I find that you are too factual a lot of the time and I’d like to hear more open-ended questioning and discussion of issues raised by the show (ie. Do you think Rumple knows he’s in an alternate land or is he just as clueless). You are both very easily willing to accept the other’s opinion rather than challenge it. I’d like to see more dialogue with this.
Again, I’ve only listened to 3 or 4 episodes, so I’m not sure if these “issues” have been raised already. But just some feedback. I listen to a few TV show podcasts and IMO this is what makes the others stand out.
Thanks for the hard work
Cheers
Hi there. Thanks for listening and for leaving a comment. I know there are alot of other Once Upon a Time podcasts that you can listen to out there, and I’m glad you happened upon ours.
1 – The extended recaps is the one part of the podcast that we have received the most negative feedback on, so I have now edited them out of Episodes 1 through 4. From Episode 5 forward, we have a very, very brief mention of what the show was about.
2 – I’m sorry that you “hate it” when I you bring up Lost, but from Episode 1 of the podcast I mentioned that there were a number of groups of people that would enjoy Once Upon a Time;
Lost fans (and there are a whole bunch that listen to the podcast. The only TV analysis/review podcast I ever listened to was about Lost, so that what I have been influenced by, too),
Once Upon a Time fans (On it’s own, and it would seem you are in this category. Cool),
Disney fans,
Fairy Tale fans,
etc.
When I watch the show I can only notice what I notice. If it is a Lost reference, I can’t help but bring it up. Early in the podcast episodes, people would comment and/or email mentioning that I forgot to mention this or that Lost connection. I understand that you wouldn’t connect with those mentions if you haven’t seen Lost. I don’t mean to “grate” on you with my “endless” Lost references, but some do enjoy it. I realize that there are some listeners who feel the same way as you, but keep in mind that when we get a large group of listeners with different influences and tastes together, sometimes some will hear connections that they don’t resonate with. I think as you will notice as the podcasts moved forward that the connections are more mixed, instead of segmented. I also think we are focused more on the show, instead of outside connection. My opinion.
3 – The Frog Prince is a great theory. See, that is what we enjoy about this show is that when we get a large group of listeners together with different points of view, you get great theories like this. Excellent!
4 – Normally, my wife (Colleen) and I actually agree on alot of things. However, in a more recent episode we didn’t. Many times listeners like yourself bring in the opposing views, as well. I hope that you will continue to listen to the rest of the episodes and find that we bring something different to the TV podcasting table.
Thanks again for listening and commenting. Happy Holidays.
First things first, your show is just lovely. I’ve enjoyed every episode so far and not only do you bring up things and connections and theories that I would never have noticed, but you also steer clear of spoilers for the most part. I like that’s don’t have to be careful when I listen to you guys. Thank you!
For my part, I think it’d be great to have an episode with your own wild speculations in it. Yes, that and nothing else. Just because you can.
Oh, on a side note, this last episode just won’t download properly as I keep missing the end of the show. I’m not fussed because you were saying goodbye already, but maybe it’s something to look into?
I love your podcast! The theories are great, I love the Lost references, and OUAT’s Easter eggs are lots of fun. I found ABC’s video with “commentary” a joke – even Snow Falls had only 4 vague comments? Still, I re-watch each episode after your show to see what I missed. Thanks for keeping it fun, clean and positive!
Hi Jeff
Thanks for the reply. With regards to the Lost stuff– it would be very helpful if you guys could explain the connections that you see (again, I’m just making my way through episode 5 or 6…) What I’ve noticed is that you’ll drop a name or an event and say “oh that’s exactly like what happened with X” but won’t explain why it’s exactly the same or what the purpose behind the character on Lost was so that non-Lost viewers (like me) could experience the connection with you. An example that comes to mind is how you find similarity between EQ’s smoke monster and the smoke monster on Lost. To me, I have no idea what this means. What was the role that the smoke monster on Lost played? While I’m not saying that you need to explain the entire plot history of a character, a little background would be helpful for people like myself who have no connection to Lost so that we can at the least understand why there may be parallels.
With regards to the recaps– I actually liked them. But I guess I’m in the minority. I was sad to see them go. What I’ve experienced other TV podcasts do is that they recap and discuss as they go along. Just an idea.
Sorry if I seem a little critical, I mean no offence. I listen to basically only TV podcasts and I like what I like, lol. I do appreciate the time and effort you and your wife put in to this venture– so, thank you 🙂
You are welcome. We will try to add a bit of extra explanation to the Lost side of things when we refer to Lost connections in the show, for sure. As far as the shows with recaps, I left a download link to the versions of Podcast Eps 1 through 4 with the recaps included for those who wanted to hear them on the podcast posts. You can find them on: http://ouat.roneyzone.com/test/
Yup, doing a podcast with a great group of listeners like we have with such varied backgrounds, likes and interests is always a balancing act. You know you can’t please everyone. You try to, but you can’t.
I appreciate your feedback. Thanks again.
